Americans have never been able to spell English and in fact there are so many American mis-spelled English words that the mis-spelled words are often now the norm. Bale refers to a group or bundle of object(s) such as a bale of hay; Bale arm is an English invention and part of a certain type of spinning/threadline/fixed spool reel. Bail is what you are going to need to get out of jail. Now, I’m glad that we have got that sorted out but don’t look at me so balefully!
