Tony and others:

You might want to try one of these fly threaders. It holds the
eye of the fly in line with the groove magnetically. After placing the fly, one
simply pushes the tippet along the groove (from right hand side), through the
eye of the hook and as you can see the end of the tippet comes out on the
left.  They green thread in the photo is simply a lanyard that the person
is wearing around their neck so that the threader is always available. They
retail online for about $10.00. The eye of the fly must be clear of any threads
or hackles.

The reason I had 7X on was because I was fishing sz 26
midges for Trout on Tuesday. There was still a small Caddis hatch on
and
I was also using sz 16 and 18 tent wing Caddis. 6X would not work,
trout
were too finiky. I did not think about taking my vest with the tippit
spools, I just grabbed the rod and a small box of flies. If I get to
back to fish that pond again, I will have 4X on.
Yes, I do have a
problem tying on the small flies and the fine tippet.

[VFB] Was fishing this am. Now Lasik- threading the eye of a hook

2010-05-25 Thread Don Ordes
My problem is the opposite. I can, only without my glasses, thread a #28
Tiemco with a 7x tippet without any problem, tie the knot, dress the fly, etc.
Then I put my glasses back on, and cast, and everything small still disappears,
including anything size 18 or smaller.

I've got perfect up-close macro-vision- I have to tie my size 32 Mustads naked
eye, but can do that without a problem. But I can hardly recognize the person
sitting across from me (at a show) without putting my glasses back on, which
are now lineless tri-focals.

I'm thinking of getting Lasik surgery, but this TN surgery has postponed that
thought for a while. I realize i will lose macro-vision, but it should be
worth it to throw my glasses away. I found out that shooting pool with
trifocals is near impossible.

I talked with Dave Whitlock last year at the Denver Furimski show, and he's had
the L-surgery. He's in his 80's, but says he's got 20/20 vision again, first
time since his teens.

Anyone else had the Lasik surgery? Do you like the results? Has it helped
both long-range and close up vision? Is it nice to wear decent sunglasses
again?

Bass. The takes were real slow, just felt the line tighten up and the fish was
there.
Had another take and when the bass came out of
the water, he broke off. Tied in a Peackock body bugger. When I turned out of
the wind, I noticed my wife back at the van waving me to come back. I could not
belerve she was already finished. Heading back to the van I made another cast
and hooked up with a Largmouth. That made five Bass, two break offs and one
miss. Not bad for about an hour fishing.

I will have to check this out. I am tired of taking 15 minuets to tie a
small fly on the tippet.

Tony and others:

You might want to try one of these fly threaders. It holds the eye of the
fly in line with the groove magnetically. After placing the fly, one simply
pushes the tippet along the groove (from right hand side), through the eye
of the hook and as you can see the end of the tippet comes out on the left.
They green thread in the photo is simply a lanyard that the person is
wearing around their neck so that the threader is always available. They
retail online for about $10.00. The eye of the fly must be clear of any
threads or hackles.

The reason I had 7X on was because I was fishing sz 26 midges for Trout on
Tuesday. There was still a small Caddis hatch on and I was also using sz 16
and 18 tent wing Caddis. 6X would not work, trout were too finiky. I did not
think about taking my vest with the tippit spools, I just grabbed the rod
and a small box of flies. If I get to back to fish that pond again, I will
have 4X on.
Yes, I do have a problem tying on the small flies and the fine tippet.

My wide has a double appointment at the doctors office this morning and
normally she will be there for a couple of hours. I have permission to fish
the pond alongside the parking lot.I have never got to fish it because of
time of the year or having my appointment. It was overcast and real windy
but I gave it a shot. Tied on a Peacock and Bronze. Had nothing for a while
then I got a good fish on. I never did see it before breaking off. I had
some 7X tipprt on my leader and had no other with me. Then I tied in a
Peacock body nymph with a gold bead head. That did yeild a couple of
Largmouth Bass. The takes were real slow, just felt the line tighten up and
the fish was there.
Had another take and when the bass came out of the water, he broke off. Tied

 Hi Don,
i do not find these types of tools very handy, so I switched to manual
whip. But - if memory serves, in the early times these whip finishers
were smaller. Why do they make it today so huge? Must be a nightmare to

Re: [VFB] update on me too

2010-05-25 Thread Don Ordes
Well, I got back from the surgeon awhile ago (two weeks early), and I'm free
and clear- all done!

3.5 weeks from brain surgery to all healed up. Time to go do whatever I want.
And the rivers and lakes are blown out- LOL. Lots of rain recently, and
they're predicting more.

That's OK. This doctor and his hospital (his as in owner) have restored my
faith in professional medicine. Thanks to Pete Gramp for turning me on to him.

Won't waste too many words- have said it all before. Whoo-hoo!

PS The doc said he met Veronica while he was in there. She had a very

Pat, You're doing much better than I did after the last time they opened me
up. Took me about 4 weeks before I even felt the urge to try tying. I finally
did my dozen flies for a swap, but had to make them really simple ones because
I just couldn't concentrate or sit still at my bench for long. Who knows,
while tying under the inbfluence you may come up with a real doozy of a fly.

Re: [VFB] Was fishing this am. Now Lasik- threading the eye of a hook

2010-05-25 Thread Joyce Westphal
The trouble with Lasik is that it is NOT permanent. This is because your
eyes will continue to get more far sighted, presbyopic as you get older, so
the Lasik will only last for about 4-6 years and then it will no longer be
so effective. We are currently doing a neat operation for people whose eyes
are so out of focus but knowing the eyes will change, and being either so
myopic or presbyopic that contacts are not a good option, in which the lens
is actually put inside the eye, rather like one does with a cataract surgery
intraocular lens, but without removing any of the eye, as is done when there
is a cataract. So far it is in a rather experimental stage, but the ones we
have done have been very successful. Perhaps you will want consider waiting
a bit before you have Lasik and see if this might be an option for you. You
get rid of the glasses and can change out the implanted lens as your eye
changes. One of the complications of Lasik, though it has improved, is an
increase in glare at night and seeing haloes. Some people don't have much
problem with this, others get much increased glare and distortion. Of the
three people I know who are good friends, who have had Lasik, they all
loved the Lasik at first, but all three are now wearing glasses due to the
natural changes in the eye from growing older. Whatever you do, be sure to
check out the pros and cons. Joyce
