Don, have you ever gap wrapped or rope dubbed any steelhead fllies. I've a
bunch of purple perils to tie, and I'm thinking that rope dubbing them would
be quicker and look as good as the standard chenille and yarn type bodies.
 What do you think? Joyce

I wish to change the thread. Rick: forgive me for piggy-backing on your QFTD.
Especially for you who fish a lot of midges and other wet patterns. I was
looking across my old list of Favorite Web sites, and clicked on some. You
should have a look at San Juan River Fly patterns by Mike More at
ifly4trout.com. There are several sets of photos from past swaps from that
site, many of which would be useful on waters other than the San Juan. Quite a
few could be rope-dubbed.
Some of you (like me) might be interested in copying the photos to put in a
collection of fly photos. Some excellent patterns and tying shown here.
Forgive the change of subject. Back to lurking.

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Bliss
When I was in New Zealand, I picked up some pelt scraps from a store. Some
nice person brought the Australian Possums to NZ and with no preditors they
have grown uncontrolled. Their pelt is very soft and the dubbing is nice to
work with. I am sure you can find someone down there who sells it rather
inexpensively if you want a pelt. Otherwise there are people who sell the
dubbing. I have some and can find the seller if you want.

This fiber place has all sorts of wools, and fibers from different animal,

Hi Gary;

I really like this one too!  Kinda a cross between Dave Whitlocks fox squirrell
nymph and a Czech nymph.

DonO:

What's the advantage of not using a wire rib?  I always thought the wire rib
served two purposes, a little flash and secondly it add reinforcement to the
dubbing.

(Embedded image moved to file: pic02732.jpg)

John Bethke's Pink Squirrel Nymph-  This fly pattern recipe has a wire rib,
which I would delete
in favor of a dubbing mix that will segment and look the same without a
rib.  Use a little gold in the dubbing
blend if you want the flash, and that will accent the segments.

DonO

Thanks for the critique.  You're right. I tried to stay too close to the
originator's recipe.
And I could have rope dubbed the wire for the durabilitiy factor.  I'll
get better
I hope. Back to the DVD and paying closer attention.  LOL

Background:

John Bethke has said that he was frustrated by trout hitting his Bio-Strike
indicator.
So he went home and found he had some shell pink chenille that was a pretty
close match colorwise.

Here is his description of his fly:

[VFB] Rope dub swap-back ground my fly

2010-09-10 Thread ashley strutt
Just got back from working away and reading emails on my phone!

Didn't look to closely at the pictures as I haven't got my flies yet but
will let you know.

Mine came about when I was sent some seals fur from a friend in Ireland for
the purpose of experimentation with mixes for dry mayflies to fish on the
loughs. I thought it would be a good idea to do rope dubbing for the bodies
with a nice segmented result. I sent the flies over for testing (which I
will be doing myself next week). They worked very well with one helping my
friends son win a competition. The wings on the fly in the swap are congo
hair which I find helps floatation but calf body hair also looks good but it
isn't easy to get decent stuff.

I'm thinking it may be worth adding a pearl rib in with the rope as well.

Thanks to Dono for hosting and everyone else who took part.
