Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?
It is in the November 2018 Flyfishing & Flytying magazine (from the UK). It is a standard hedgehog pattern You can see some tied on Youtube. You can certainly tie it any size that works for you. It reminds me of the Blue Ribbon flies sunken stone pattern. I found the metallic thread by doing an online Google search but also found my local fly shop had it. You can often also find things like that at JoAnns. My JoAnns did not have it, however. I wound it onto my Nor-vise bobbin using the spool stuck on my sewing machine thread holder and my electric drill to do the winding. I'm tying mine on a size 11 Stealth dry fly hook. The thread is a bit thinner and easier to break than standard 8-0 Uni but still does a good job. I'm reinforcing the bottom at the end of the fly tying with Flexament. I just read the post of the fly from the journal, and I stand corrected - that fly would certainly work in the waters where I fish. Which issue of the Flyfishing and Tying Journal was it in, Joyce? I can't seem to locate that fly in the Winter 2019 issue, but I may have missed it... you have my curiosity going here. From the name of the fly, I doubt I'd ever fish it, based on the water types I fish most often (very narrow, slow flowing brooks and streams with trout of max size ~10 inches in length)... but you never know, if tied small enough, they may work where I fish :) And besides, I tie spey and atlantic salmon flies in 6/0 size and goodness knows I'll likely not fish those any time soon! Nice fly. I often use Aunt Lydia's rug yarn, single strand as a post. Currently finishing up so Road Hog flies, but need to find some more dark deer hair.
