 The possum, albeit with relatively short hairs, has a pretty
interesting mix of hair types. Some, especially the older bucks, have
quite woolly crimped hair.

Hi DonO;
Makes me think however posted that recipie wasn't using
Austrailian possum. Actually, I thought the abdomen looked
more like wool yarn than dubbing.
The bleached squirrell color I was looking to obtain is a
light tanish color. I know I could use many other materials
but would like to bleach some squirrell just for the
challenge. That and there are a lot of squirrells in my yard
I'd like to skin and use as fly tying material!

 A friend moved here from Israel for a 2 year stint at a youth
organisation, and I wanted to take her to the Australian animal zoo.
Lots of opportunity to collect 'samples' if you were careful ;)
On the bright side, I have noticed many wombats, wallabies and kangaroos
on the side of the road and will be doing a bout of harvesting in the
very near future. Had a large koala once in the middle of nowhere but my
wife was in the car and would have castrated me if I touched it. Lots of
Rainbow Lorikeets around too...google them and you will see why I am
so excited (especially if you are into Salmon Flies).
I also saw half a dozen penguins down on the beach near my house
yesterday. Sorry DonOthey are the little Fairy Penguins..and
protected something chronic.

  Reuven,
  If you do all of that road-kill harvesting, you'll pass up Nick as our
honorary foreign Red-neck of the Year.
  I want some koala if you get one. Some wombat would be interesting too.
(Make sure you disinfect- don't need Aussie bugs along with my regular bugs,
LOL)

  Oh, if you need some Cajun RK recipes, just let me know. The other
'hillbilly' method is all just breaded and deep-fried.

  I've checked again, and the EPs aren't listed on any cities list still, as
their numbers are at or above
  normal (millions in some of many rookeries), and there are no imposing
threats.  Hundreds of thousands
  die each year of natural causes and predation just to keep the populations in
check.  Seems
  I should be able to wrangle one skin from somewhere. A 4' tall bird would
yield a lot of feathers.

  I gotta have them for my 'Ridlin Special Bi-polar Flies'. Tony has one.

Re: [VFB] Australian Possum Dubbing

2011-01-03 Thread Wayne Blake-Hedges
Hi DonO;

How ironic, my oldest daughter was sightseeing in Washington DC today and
snapped a photo of one.  I don't think DC police would take too kindly to me
shaving it though!

Can you imagine a squirrell shaving contest???  Live of course!

Hi DonO;

Makes me think however posted that recipie wasn't using Austrailian possum.
Actually, I thought the abdomen looked more like wool yarn than dubbing.

The bleached squirrell color I was looking to obtain is a light tanish color.
I know I could use many other materials but would like to bleach some squirrell
just for the challenge.  That and there are a lot of squirrells in my yard I'd
like to skin and use as fly tying material!
