What about this:

http://www.stenzel-flyfishing.com/sid/eb945d148e6ed96cdbe1a95deb0f5a2c/lang/1/cl/alist/cnid/koh-i-noor

you get a reel made in Germany. Machined on NC lathes and mills using
bar stock aluminum. The plant is in Pforzheim, where they previously did
manufacture jewelry and watches. Stenzel did make musical instruments.
the Koh-i-nor has only 5 parts including screws. No drag, I have one
and it is a great and beautiful reel. They have more expensive ones, but
my next will be one of theirs.

they sell further reels, so look close.

Since you're not going to depend on the reel to take a beating and
keep on reeling, I'd say take a look at Cabelas.

They should carry a 7wt and you can probably get one for under $150,
 maybe less.

I wouldn't take one of these to the salt, and I doubt that's where
you're taking it, since you don't play the fish on the reel.

That's my 2 cents, anyway. I have a Lamson on my 7/8 wt and I've
landed 30 pound dorado with it. Drag worked flawlessly.

in Pforzheim as well and probably a Spinnoff of Stenzel? I heard about that.

Re: [VFB] reels

2009-12-08 Thread Don Ordes
Since you're not going to depend on the reel to take a beating and keep on
reeling, I'd say take a look at Cabelas.
They should carry a 7wt and you can probably get one for under $150, maybe less.

I wouldn't take one of these to the salt, and I doubt that's where you're
taking it, since you don't play the fish on the reel.

That's my 2 cents, anyway. I have a Lamson on my 7/8 wt and I've landed 30
pound dorado with it. Drag worked flawlessly.

The wacky Italian broad wants the info to buy me a Christmas present, not
sure whyJ I wouldn't mind a large arbor, but don't know that I need one since I
rarely have a fish on the spool, so the drag is also somewhat moot. I'd like
150 yds on the spool w/ 7wt line. I fish right handed, retrieve w/ the left
I'd like spare spool capability. I spend more on the rod than on the reel, my
reels are typically fairly basic can take a beating. This is an opportunity
for me to upgrade w/out her spending too much. Plus, I don't need her to know
how much stuff actually costs, so if she spends $250 +/- $50, she'll know why I
value the equipment w/out knowing how much I actually spend.

Need more details for what you need in the reel.

  - Arbor, drag, spare spool capability, R/L hand swap, backing capacity, etc.

Suggestions for a 7wt reel under $300?

Yeah, I like the Lamsons, been using Orvis mostly. Haven't fished salt yet,
but I'm sure I will eventually.
