I've used a solution of OXY clean and warm water, same as soaking a nice
white item of laundry that has a stain on it. I've used this on white
hackle that is very old,polar bear and skunk's white part that was
yellowish.
OXYclean is the stuff that used to be advertised on TV, it is peroxide
Go to a beauty supply company and get the same peroxide they use for
bleaching hair. I don't remember the exact strength, but they will know.
Then be very careful with it as it can damage and destroy the product you
are bleaching if you leave it on too long. they can also recommend a
neutralizer
The first thing I would do is try and find a skin with natural white fur.
Then take the bleaching road.
In his book, Eric Leiser mentions that tried bleaching Australian possum but
he was only able to get a creamy colour. He also states that he used full
strength peroxide at 20%.

To me the real question is, will trout know if the fly is tied with real
possum or would a similar substitute work as well? Just wondering if
semi-seal would not be as effective, and, as Don says, a cree hackle instead
of one brown and one grizzly? I've tied these with a variant brown/grizzly
And I'll never forget watching you use the nit-picker and making me a very
special fly.. still have it in my don't touch collection. Joyce

Hi DonO;
Makes me think however posted that recipie wasn't using Austrailian possum.
Actually, I thought the abdomen looked more like wool yarn than dubbing.
The bleached squirrell color I was looking to obtain is a light tanish color.
I know I could use many other materials but would like
We have or had one on the road about a mile from my house. Have not seen it in
a few months. Dot and I have seen it several times.

Hi DonO;
How ironic, my oldest daughter was sightseeing in Washington DC today and
snapped a photo of one. I don't think DC police would take too kindly to me
shaving it though!
Can you imagine a squirrell shaving contest??? Live of course!

I can do that.
You are first in line for one at the Sowbug.

Hi Tony,
on my first trip to the sowbug
I would not say Quads are lighter. They might of felt that way because id the
shorter length.

Hi Tony;
Maybe so but those quads of yours Scott's sure felt a lot lighter and faster
than my 8' 5wt fiberglass Cortland Pro-Crest. A real eye opener to what can be
created in bamboo with modern tapers techniques. Or perhaps it's the Boo
wizards that created them!.
I always thought
For me, I just wanted to tie to fish, and I saw 'aussie possum' and thought
it was something unique.
As for using cree vs grizzly and brown, I'll use a grizzly variant that;s as
close to cree as I can afford.
Like I said, I'm tying to throw, not for show. :)
