[VFB] Sowbug 2025 / asking for travel tips

Folks,

maybe I do it again. Son is just talking me into going to the sowbug 
2025 with him, and spend also some time for serious fishing. It is a 
father and son trip, not so much father and child. And my 4th visit at 
the event.


We are in an very early phase of investigation, so the outcome is not 
clear, and we also might do something very different.


Anyway: Current plan is to fly in one week before the Sowbug, fish a 
very nice area for trout or warmwater, go the Sowbug. We need to return 
on Saturday, so we could only spend 2 days at the sowbug.


Currently we are looking for an area for this initial fishery, as it is 
early in the year we are looking somehow South. One Idea is: Fly to 
Memphis, drive to Great Smokey Mountains (Near Knoxville) Do some 
Fishing, drive to the Sowbug, Attend Sowbug and return to Germany via 
Memphis. A bit of driving, though.


Any other ideas or suggestions?

Good to hear from you, Memphis i about 5 hours from Flippin a bit shorter to 
Mtn. Home. WE are about 25 minuets from Mtn Home now that we have a four lane 
highway. It was just two lane when you were here. 
Fishing should me good. I am not sure yet is I will be able to take you on the 
river but I can find a friend that should be able to do it. Most of my fishing 
friends have passed on. I have not been on the river for two years. I am having 
some pretty bad health issues with spells. I don't know when they will hit me 
and at times I get totally unresponsive. It has really gotten bad this year.
I will be having a brain study next week. I have to go to Branson to a 
specialist up there. I will have probes put on my head that will record my 
brain waves 24 hours for the five days. I hope I will be able to tie at the 
Sowbug.. I was asked to make a presentation bamboo rod to auction off but so 
far I have not been able to work in the shop to get one made.
Looking fwd to seeing you again and we want you and your wife to spend a bit of 
time with us.
I think I told you what is up at Branson, I think you will find a lot to do 
there if you decide to go up there.
We used to get a season pass for Silver Dollar City but since we don't travel 
anymore we don't do it any more. I just go to see some of my doctors up there. 
It is about a two hour drive.

It is both scenic and a tourist area with a lot of country shows. Lot of 
tourist attractions like the Titanic, WW2 museum a lot of different food 
restaurants and  rides on the WW2 Ducks that take you out on the lake. There is 
also a showboat and dinner show. The boat is a paddle wheel boat like used on 
the Mississippi river. That is just a few things. March has not started the 
tourist season yet so prices are reasonable.
Day before yesterday I had to go to a specialist in Branson and in the waiting 
room was a person that looked familiar. We talked a bit and he said that he was 
80 years young and survived two plane crashes. It was Mikey Gilly. I shook his 
hand and as he reached for Dot's hand she said she wanted a hug. He gave her a 
big hug and my son took a photo. He then stayed a bit and talked to us. Great 
person. When he left I said, we have something in common. Two plane crashes and 
the same doctor.

I'm finalizing right now my flight plans, need to update plans a bit due to

I see 2 options:
 
1. Fly to Memphis, spend a week or so at Sowbug, and 1 week in the Memphis 
area
2. Fly to Sowbug (Springfield/Memphis), fly to Boston and spend there one 
week before returning to Europe
 
 
I know the Boston area, so I know what to do there. However, some 
questions:

[VFB] Sowbug 2017 & Branson MO.

When I attended the Sowbug in 2011 I checked out Branson Airport, MO but 
the airline services at that time were very limited and connections not 
possible for me. Today, some 5 years later it still seems quite limited. 
I could only find 2 airlines listed - Branson Air Express and Elite 
Airways. Apparently flights are now operated to Austin TX,  New Orleans 
LA, Denver CO and Houston TX. I suspect the flight frequencies are 
somewhat limited which could make connections difficult.  I flew to 
Sprigfield MO.

Did you see Nick's note?  Can you downsize your pictures before posting 
them?  Your camera is taking them at 3.6 MB.  If you send 10 pics, 
that's 36 MB which can really overwhelm a lot of folks.


I tried uploading that Sowbug photo of us and it worked nicely. Maybe 
Nick's photobucket account is the way to go.

Jack Harford and I won't get in till late evening on the 14th.  Our club 
auction is the 13th.  As treasurer, I'll have to make a big bank deposit 
before leaving Thursday morning.  Then it's a ten-hour drive if traffic

A good and user friendly way to share megabyte pictures is DropBox.
Uploading to a DropBox folder and then send the link to this folder in the
email makes it possible to share lots and lots using very little server
space.

Hi Birdie,

Sowbug isn't till March 20-22.  Most people are probably shoveling snow 
and chopping wood for their fireplaces.  I just now (5 minutes ago) got 
home from a little trip to the hospital getting Stent #10 installed.  
Orders are rest for a week, so the snow will just be Piled higher and 
Deeper in our drive and on our walk.

I can't remember if we can attach photos or not, but if so, here's
another one from Sowbug 2006.  It was taken at breakfast at Western
Sizzlin' when the Sowbug was still being held at the Ramadamadingdong
motel.

Not sure of my memory, but from left to right are
Don Ordes, Murf, ? Slater, Kevin Slater, Buck Hall, Misako Ishamura,
Mark Romero, and Rick Zeiger at the head of the table (we tried to
stick him with the bill),

Coming on around the corner we have:  Someone I can't make out, Terry
Kirkpatrick, Someone I know but went
totally brain dead (I'll remember about 3 in the morning), Larry
Fulkerson,
yours truly, and Jimmy Moore.  I think everyone there was on VFB except
my chaperone, Larry F.

Murf died suddenly about 3 weeks later as I remember.
