Re: [VFB] Best fish of the summer QFTD #2
I always feel cheated when I catch a fish on a spinning rod, it only seems like half a fish compared to the fight you feel with a fly rod. Tom Davenport I have felt that way just about every time I've caught a fish on conventional gear. I used to spin-fish if the wind was too much. Now I wait for the wind to die down so I can fly fish. Unless I'm catching yellowfin tuna for the freezer, (or maybe halibut 100' down someday?), I always opt for the fly rod. Re: [VFB] Best fish of the summer / snake guides v. single foot guide
Hi Don, I don't know what kinda stick thei'r usin' booot... this rises a question for me: Most fly rodds are sold with snake guides, I usually feel, that single foot guides have less impact on the blanks (aka rod)'s action. So I build most of my rods with single food guides. Only my 2 9wt' rods for the salt are using snake guides (mostly because the kit did contain 'em). @all + Don: What is your opinion about single vs. snake guides? Rene btw: While our bamboo tony is recovering (I'm really glad to hear 'bout it), nice idea from Don to talk rods. btw2: just finished my botttle of excellent red wine to the bbq, hope my English is not to bad.. Re: [VFB] Best fish of the summer / snake guides v. single foot guide
Rene, Tony helped me get started making bamboo rods. From personal experience I prefer Snake Brand snake guides. I made a set of identical rods, except one was with single foots and the other with snakes. I am not an expert caster, but there was no discernible notice to me. I think a lot of it is marketing hype. Consumers need to see new things all the time or they don't want to buy. If anything I say make your choice based on what looks best to you because I doubt most people can feel a difference. Just my $0.02.
