Here is a bass article on setting the hook. It is more for gear fishers,
but does give some insight.

We do quite a bit of bass fishing here in Indiana. Sometimes giving the
bass a 1-2 count before setting the hook helps. I find that hard to do
though, especially after a nice bass has just smashed the popper :)
