When I invented outriggers many centuries ago, (it was for the Egyptians), I had to come up with many options for different services- single/double, long/short, one-beam/two beam, light-weight/heavy-weight canti-levered, stationary/removable, & narrow/wide foot-print. The groups that would become the islanders were taking off into the oceans and with them and then the Nile useage, I had my hands full.

Seems each boating circumstance had it's best adaptation on one side or the other. When recently I invented the ultra-lite flyfishing platform (on canoes & Kayaks), I decided that the close-in, single-beam, narrow foot-print was best. This would give the boat stability and fishability. I used my hard foam design for lightness and durability. The single-beam, narrow foot-pring allows the fisherman to play a big fish around the boat by maneuvering the rod tip around the short, close-in outrigger. The single beam would keep him from coming up between the spars and being trapped in too close for the long rod to maneuver.

Sailing was a different option from fishing, and if I wanted those will-be Polynesians to have any kind of speed and tacking ability with a keel-less boat, I needed to make some variations. Since sailing (tacking) requires steering, either by paddle or rudder, that had to be taken into account. So I made long dugouts where a bunch of them could paddle in a row and use the sails to assist. Worked well- kept them in shape and they got to the islands quicker.

Also, the type of water was a factor for those early outrigger designs- surf, waves, or flat. If I just wanted a little wind to drift/troll, then the outriggers needn't be so drastic.

These days, an electric trolling motor would be a good place to start. It has a rudder, handle, and optional power for docking and beaching. So I invented trolling motors to be used with the batteries I had already invented earlier.

Hold on... yes dear?
Uhhhhhh- no. Will do, dear.
OK, be right back.
Time for my meds...

I'm planning to put a set of these on my canoe, and maybe a sail too.

Jimmy, Tony

My plans for my 15' Gruman Sports Canoe are half-way there. I bought the

canoe double-outrigger above from Cabelas, and it easily dismantles for
general canoeing. The casting platform will have a leaning post and a
line-minder on the front of the platform. With a 3-pont stance on the
platform, and a stable boat, which is wide for a canoe (3'), it'll be
plenty
stable. I can stand and fish now, but I still have to mind what I'm
doing.
With the platform and outriggers, I'll be able to concentrate on fishing.

My wife don't know it yet, but she gets the paddling duties. The seats
will
be swivel folding, cushioned boat seats, so may back will have it easy.

I may build a 2nd tall platform in back for poling the shallows in
Florida.

I used a canoe a few times, when I was younger and had better balance.
I'd
never get used to a kayak. I did have a cute little pontoon boat that I
used
for a while, but it was much like fishing from a boat. Finally sold it
to
VFB member Jack Lehman. Jack loves it.

Have you thought about putting at least one "outrigger" on the canoe
you're
building? If so, you could stand up when need be. Just a thought.

JIMMY D

I have tried my son in law's kayak It is OK for a while but my hack
gives
out in a short time sitting with my legs stretched out in front of me.
Hope to finish my canoe in the spring, I will give that a try. I have a
20' river boat but it is not fly fishing fishing from it.
