There is a good chance I'm heading to NYC and BH Photo so does anyone suggest
a good handheld microphone with1/8 inch jack. Thanks, this will be replacing my
crappy 20 year Radio Shack one.

Have you considered buying an XLR-1/4 balanced adapter and a 1/4
balanced-1/8 adapter? Then you could use XLR microphones and get a
better selection.
