i tested the Zi8 with the senn ew100 lav mics. (this mic has an adjustable
output level and it took a couple of tries to get the sound right.) in the end
had good levels with no high pitched sounds. has anyone else tried mics that
have adjustable levels? maybe that's the key?

Yet you're not going to achieve anything but poor audio quality (in
comparison to more robust units), from systems DESIGNED to be substandard in
quality. This, me thinks, is what David was alluding to -- and I tend to
agree.

I dont know what you're using to edit your videos with however in Final Cut
Pro, you can play with the audio using the Parametric Equalizer audio filter.
That may help with the hissing.

If you mean the little mic-icon menu, then yes, I think so. I tried pushing the
levels all the way on the "+" side, abd there was louder sound, but also louder
hissing...

Yes, pretty much. The 2nd room was much bigger, but the camera should perform,
no? This is just basic test videos in a quiet environment. If
The first set with mic off I heard a high pitched sound in the background but
the audio was clear.
In the second set there was something muting the sound or there was some kind
of distance. Was the mic held at the same distance and position each time?
