I've been meaning to buy a Xacti for a while, and I was thinking that
a waterproof E1 would serve me well up here in the Pacific Northwest
winter. (Seems the trick is not to totally immerse it too much, or
the screen dies)
Also, I've loved the quality of the footage that people get
I agree, a great camera that you dont mind not being too delicate with it...
and not too surprised he found such a good deal -- they make new models of
these xactis at a pretty steady clip so the older model (which is usually
only last years model) tend to get these good online deals.

Too bad that there is no external mic. Looks like the HD1000 is the
least expensive Xacti ($400-500) with that.
