Yeah thats pretty much how camtwist works, it shows up in apps as if its a
camera.
The reason there are more of these effect programs on the Mac is Quartz

Thats one thing that irkles me about Quartz Composer, people redistributing

without crediting the original author.

releasing apps or packs of quartz composer effects, that dont bother to mention
