Re: [videoblogging] Videoblogging book is cancelled
Okay, chiming in...I've only written for O'Reilly. I don't work for them(!). However, from everyone I've met who's even remotely affiliated with the company, I can say they're a great group.Yes, they've recognized vlogging (semi-obvious since they started the process of publishing a book on it). I highly doubt they're going to work with others. They had/have the pioneers. Where else would they go? Why would they go somewhere else? I just don't see it.I think they were honest and didn't see it as a profitable market given the timeframe. I can guarantee that it was not an easy decision to make. People inside the company had devoted themselves to the book, too.I do believe that when they choose to pursue the video blogging market, they'll look to the same people. Wouldn't you?Hey, if I get the opportunity to do a second edition, I'd be ecstatic. (Shameless plug: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/digitalvideohks/ ). (Hey, I did say shameless.)And, yes, a vlog handbook would be very cool.Best,JoshOn Sep 29, 2005, at 12:09 PM, Michael Sullivan wrote: i can only speculate i dont think at all that its too early. they have recognized vlogging maybe Joshua Paul can chime in. maybe it means that they are going to work with others... maybe an updated 'podcast' book that covers video. maybe they will instead go with a different theme and do a new overall grass roots media book and include vlogging chapters maybe they will come out with new DV Hacks edition. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dvideopg/ I think that if we do make a printed book, a vlog handbook would be perfect. one of those small pocket sized books then we can hand them out for free. sullOn 9/29/05, Chris Baudry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We found out that O'reilly has cancelled the Videoblogging hacks book. The word from Chuck, the editor, is that their marketing departmentdetermined that this book and 2 others were too risky financially. [videoblogging] Another encoding alternative... (online)
You can upload your raw video (typically directly from your digital photo camera) using this link: http://vided.org/index.php?page=uploadpublic (upload limit 30MB) The result will be shown within minutes (depending on size of upload) at this link: http://vided.org/index.php?page=list_publicsearch=unregistered Video will be made at 320*240 resolution (aspect ratio will be kept if encoding widescreen video) 1 minute with video and sound will be like 2.5 MB. This makes it approx. 330 kbps data rate, which should run fine for all broadband users. The quality seems fine to me, and the file plays well in quicktime. The format is ffmpeg/libavcodec's mpeg4 codec in a MP4-container. This is usually recommended ahead of proprietary formats like .wmv and even .mov. The encoded videos will be left for download by anyone, which means that this is a share and reuse offer. There will also be made a quadruple thumbnail picture of the video, 4 pictures of the first 100 frames. Keyword change/add is disallowed for unregistered users for now. Please give me a comment if you like it or not, and what you would like to see in an eventual next version. If it is used, I will let it stay, if it is misused, I'm afraid I need to take the service down. [videoblogging] Vlog Newbie needs assistance!
Dear VideoBlogging Yahoo Group, I am new to this group, so please forgive for what will probably seem like a really redundant question! I build websites... they are simple but they are my own. I want to start putting video on my pages. I know how to put files online... What I can't figure out is how to wrap the movie file inside a skin to give visitors access to the stop/pause/play and scroll buttons under the screen. Does anyone know of a good how-to walk through instruction page? Or a good line of code... Best vlog tech I've seen so far is at: http://www.babeblvd.com Yes, it's a pin-up website! But I find the way they display the screen, how it plays into their page, to be very harmoniously embedded into the design of the page, making it an integral component of the webpage. [videoblogging] Re: $100 laptop
Its a fascinating project, but I think its still in the design phase so impossible to know just exactly what it will be capable of yet. Im very interested in the hand crank generator and general rugedness. We can presume that storage space and cpu limitations will be main considerations, and so flash-based recording devices, 320x240 or lower resolutions, fairly undemanding codec, low power consumption are factors. The problem I have with the cvs camera/hack is its not a proper sustainable model, its not a solution that can be given to millions of people via schools. From a cost point of view Id say a webcam would be a start for video-enabling these cheap pcs. If the laptop has USB then it should be possible, depending on how much of the OS they strip away, and exactly what memory/storage solution they go for. Having said all that, I will jsut be pleased if the laptop idea happens, even without video. When we read that the laptop is also going to be the brightest light source in many of these peoples homes, it puts priorities in perspective. Sidenote: If you are not following the CVS camera hacking, the original firmware version 3.40 was easily hacked, but the newer ones which have 3.62 firmware are tough to crack, and right now require you to short two connections while powering up the camera.
