[videoblogging] camtwist:free program to add effect to your webcam

2007-12-12 Thread jonny goldstein
It's kind of fun---in addition to adding effects to your webcam
streaming video, you can also splice in video clips live into
blogtv--a work around for their lack of a built in feature to cut to
canned clips.

Here's a cheesy but fun example Scott Stead and I did last night to
add effects to a video we created for seesmic (after a few glasses of
wine)

Example of camtwist in action:

Mac Download of Camtwist here:

Not sure if there is a PC version.

Too bad there isn't a PC version as all there would be needed I
imagine would be a virtual driver and a GUI to pick the camera or
other video device to capture from.

The virtual driver could be used by streaming applications or (In the
case of BlogTV shows) ActiveX controls to stream what's captured by
the virtual driver to viewers on the net. With enough CPU, there
should be little or no loss of quality at all.

Just my opinion

[videoblogging] Re: camtwist:free program to add effect to your webcam

2007-12-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Yeah thats pretty much how camtwist works, it shows up in apps as if its a
camera.

The reason there are more of these effect programs on the Mac is Quartz
Composer, which
enables a wider range of people than hardcore C++ etc programmers, to make new
effects. This tech has been around since OS X Tiger but is improved in Leopard,
and now
enables effects in ichat without the need for 3rd party apps to add this
functionality.

Maybe there is a PC equivalent, Im guessing that similar stuff is built into
some chat apps,
and perhaps bundled with certain webcams, but theres possibly not a nice
'virtual driver'
version that would work with your chat app of choice - hopefully Im wrong on
this and
someone will chime in with a solution.

Some of the challenges I face are water
 droplets on the lens,
Cheap, Quick and dirty solutions... RainX on an inexpensive but
quality filter. UV would be my first suggestion ... cheap. Some
problems with this ... backlight especially at night can reveal the
silicon ... it is a Test it First for the application. Next is forced
air across the lens plane ... think of those places where you walk
into an open doorway and pass through a curtain of air ... used this
to shoot straight up into a rain storm. Will really work best on a
stationary camera position, but some creative thinking might overcome
that limitation. The speed/velocity of this air has to exceed the
force of the rain or water spray ... I used a Squirrel Fan and a
funnel to channel the air into a narrower outlet. My friend is giving
me a small Orik (spelling) portable vacuum, I think it is battery
operated ... reversing the motor on something like this with a tube
and flange is one idea that comes to mind to attempt a backpack device.

 sun direct into the lens,
Didn't your mom tell you not to look at the sun? This is the hardest
to overcome ... A ND filter maybe in combo with a pola. A lens shade
or hood is really the ticket, but it can add drag and stabilization
difficulty, bit like sticking a cup out the window of a moving car ...
could add a couple of vent holes MAYBE. Now you could try to make it
work for you ... Star filter for example ... gives a pattern ...
Gradient (Think CSI Miami) But these are not cheap cheap, so your next
problem will mean costs of broken filters.

 damage from wipeouts
Crash Cams - on movies there is a crash camera housing ... weight is
an issue ... could look into modifying a couple of teh small pelican
cases ... I love this companies stuff http://pelican.com/home.php

lots of footage to edit as the cams are turned on and left running till
the battery runs flat or the tape or SD card fill up.

[videoblogging] Re: camtwist:free program to add effect to your webcam

2007-12-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Cool.

I was going to ask if anybody who is experimenting with live video, was using
effects, or
had started to consider what their ultimate live setup would consist of.

Reason I ask is that Ive always been interested in VJ tools for live video,
being used for
other applications. I am rather interested in systems that could aid an
individual, enabling
them to control a 'live personal tv station'. Now for most people doing that
sort of thing, I
imagine they dont have too many over the top needs, but all the same I am
interested in
the possibilities for controlling multiple camer feeds, effects, video clips,
etc. Especially
when coupled with some relatively cheap hardware, such as midi controllers or
ipod touch
the appropriate software, which can be more fun or better at controlling
certain
parameters live.

I just went overboard and got one of these extremely wonderful and flexible
controllers: http://www.jazzmutant.com/

Its a joy, and besides using it to control music,it has such potential for
controlling things
built using the (free) Quartz Composer on the Mac, opening up a lot of
potential for
realtime video stuff.

If only I wasnt so darn shy, Id be all over live video, but for now I will just
experiment and
hopefully have something that may be of use to others at some point (the stuff
I do in
Quartz wont have to be used with the expensive jazzmutant). Im just finally
getting a blog
together and will post a link once theres some content, it will mostly document
the
experiments.

Cheers

[videoblogging] Re: CamTwist:P-Vybe Clicker Test

2007-12-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Oops sorry I didnt consider that ambiguity in what I was saying. I meant people
who are
releasing apps or packs of quartz composer effects, that dont bother to mention
that they
didnt make the effects themselves. Im sure many effect creators are not wishing
to police
their effects redistribution too heavily, or get insane amounts of credit, but
jsut like
vloggers, I assume attribution may mean something to them.

I havent ever really thought about whether people who use the efects in their
vids should
give props to the effect creator. People sometimes mention the tools they use,
which is
always nice, but I dont think its a requirement by any means, although again
its really
down to the creator of the effects to put terms on its use. Quartz Composer is
nice
because people can look inside and see how the effects are made, if they like,
but as usual
it seems this, like video, is often confused for a free-for-all where anybody
can use the
stuff for any purpose, no matter how commercial or not, without considering
whether they
might need to ask for the right to use stuff.

Personally I released a few half-baked leopard ichat quartz composer effects,
and I dont
expect any credit for them for any use at all, but in the future when I do more
Quartsz
Composer stuff, I will be attaching liberal, but not public domain, terms to
them. I wont
want people to be selling software with those files included, unless they at
least ask me so
I can give permission if I choose, on a case by case basis. Camtwist is free so
they arent in
that legue, but all the same I didnt see any mention that others wrote the
original effects,
so I posted to their forum about it.

Previously I forgot to say that the link to your video didnt come through, so I
havent
actually seen it, I recognised the effect by its name.

Cheers

[videoblogging] TRANSLATION: Taxes on videos in France READ THIS

2007-12-12 Thread Jeffrey Taylor
Here's what the article says in English after a quick and dirty non-machine
translation:

This Wednesday, the Senate debated an amendment which would provide the
installation of a tax on revenue generated from the broadcast of video
content on the internet. The revenues from video-sharing platforms like
Dailymotion and YouTube will be directly targeted. In addition, the tax
could impact every internet user who offers videos on the internet.

This amendment, part of finance law-changes for 2007, was already voted in
by the National Assembly last December. Most notably, it provides for a 2%
tax on the advertising revenue of sites that broadcast under the banner of
free or pay for works or cinematic/audiovisual documents. The no-cost
broadcast of content watched by internet users will also be reconsidered.

This measure has caused a firestorm among those under threat. The young
Association of Internet Public Services (ASIC), composed of major players
on the web such as Dailymotion, Google France, PriceMinister, Yahoo! et AOL,
believe that this amendment will open a terrible door in the French
internet sector and in technological development within the country.

We can't allow the adoption of a tax that handicaps the free diffusion of
information and the sharing of content created by internet users, declared
the two co-presidents of ASIC, Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet et Giuseppe de
Martino. If it is now natural to reflect on new modes of financing of the
cultural industry, to tax the creations of internet users seems particularly
unnatural.

The ISP's, brought together under the AFA, are also coming in and denouncing
the lack of preliminary debate and consultation with the professionals
conerned.

If this amendment is passed by the commision of Finance in the Senate, it
will be presented for approval by the Senate on the 17th of December and
will be enforced as of the 1st of January, 2008.

[videoblogging] Re: TRANSLATION: Taxes on videos in France READ THIS

2007-12-12 Thread Steve Watkins
So any idea if this ammendment is likely to pass?

In cynical mode I am wary that a spectre of unfair tax doom for the free video
masses is
being waved around by industry, when they are actually worried about a tax on
their advert
revenue. Free stuff, made for free, watched for free, with little expectation
of profit or
money changing hands, cannot be taxed, the only way to do that would be to
require all
video creators to have a license to vlog, and I dont know how that could even
be
considered as practical in a youtube, daily motion etc age.

So, just like when the loud calls for protest from time to time in the USA,
whenever the
spectre of regulation of the net in one kind or another rears its ugly head, I
suspect that
its more about protecting freedom for business to profit, than any wider
freedom for the
everyman. Regulation the the net sounds like a horror, but does no regulation
of internet
advertising sound like a joy to anybody but those who profit most from such
things?

Steering back towards this tax issue rather than regulation, I dont understand
why a
special tax is needed. Surely any profit made by either creators or services,
should already
be classed as income and taxed accordingly? Is there some loophole that
companies are
using to avoid paying a fair tax in France that has caused this ammendment to
be
proposed? Or are there other factors at work, such as a tax system that
attempts to
directly tax a specific area in order to subsidise other projects in the same
field? Eg are
they intending to use the revenues from this tax, to fund the traditional
projets of
defending their own culture, language etc? Some time ago Casey (I think) posted
about
some Canadian proposal, which caused me to read a little on their system of
promoting
home-made content. Im sure it happens in many countries, as part of a
response/defense
to the USA's huge success at cultural media exports. (including cheap stuff
that local
creators cant compete with). I beleive there was recently a short discussion
about this sort
of thing on the Videoblogging Europe mailing list, some suggestions that Europe
and
elsewhere need to get better at exporting their culture via media etc. But I
digress, as
usual.

Cheers

The author replied in their forum, he got permission from the effect creators,
and apparently
they are credited in the readme and somewhere in the settings for effects, so I
was dumb
and not looking in the right places, and so it seems this app is actually a
shining example of
people doing the right thing by giving credit where its due.

So sorry for waffling about this, me wrong again lol, ah well.

If anybody has any ideas for anything theyd like to do in CamTwist or some
other QC-based
video effects, I might be able to help with customising or creating enw quartz
compositions
to achieve this. Are there many people on this list doing live shows, or shows
that involve
talking to other people via video chat, that would have any interest in this
stuff? Id like to be
of some small use, but if its not really on-topic I'll save it for elsewhere.
