[videoblogging] invite for hardcore and unencumbered journalists

2008-06-05 Thread ~ FluxRostrum
howdy,

If anyone is interested in joining our indie journalism roadtrip this summer
check out our diggs and get back to me off list.

http://mobilebroadcastnews.com/NOmadjik_AFTERtour

The NOmadjik Media Bus is dodging tornados in Nebraska and
about to head into the Lakota Nation (South Dakota)

then to the Rainbow Gathering (wyoming)
then to the DNC (Denver)
then to the RNC (st.Paul)
then to NYC for 9-11

If you'd like to come along for part of the ride, we'd love to have you
IF
you don't mind gettin' oily from time to time, have your equipment together,
can function with a small bag o'stuff in tight quarters with other journalists
and can cover your own expenses.

Just dropped another $50, to $650.00.

I'm very happy so far. I think this is a stellar vlogging/documentary
camera. Jacket pocket sized, but takes mics, headphones, and has
manual everything, 24p, 30p, 60i and different sized batteries. The
video assist light will actually show a face in darkness for those
interviews that just will not wait for light. The onboard mic is
pretty damn good, being front mounted below the lens. And there's mic
levels on screen if you want for external or internal. $70 got me a
16GB card and reader. Very fast download to Mac. Waiting for a copy of
FC Express to come so I can edit. The HF10 is black and has on board
16GB card, but people like the HF100 for much less money, and same
 basic camera.

I'll post a demo tape I did, complete with beaver, turkey, and duck
sightings in the wild's of New Hampshire on a pond.

I'm using a monopod and it's very helpful since the cam is so small.
Played off the card to an HD TV using component cables, it looks like
a DVD. And the 12x zoom is really nice for nature stuff. The still
photos are pretty good, say like a Canon SD 5MP.

If I had to complain, I'd say the AWB is a little off sometimes and
I'd rather have more video assist LEDs then a flash for stills.

[videoblogging] Is There A Standard Video Pixel Size?

2008-06-05 Thread Robin Harford
I'm wondering if there is such a thing as an industry standard video
pixel size that is recommended when publishing videos to a WP blog? I
currently use 640x480 for my screencasts.

I also see a lot of vlogs with vids around 512x308, 640x360, 575x323,
so they look more rectangular.

Any feedback would be appreciated... thanks.

[videoblogging] new flip camera

2008-06-05 Thread Jay dedman
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/05/pure-digital-flip-mino-review-round-up/

The new Flip camera is out.
i think its got a rechargeable battery now. it did just use AA batteries.

its cool that it comes with a USB drive built in, but it is strange
that it costs $200.
You can buy the Powershot for cheaper.
maybe it is the ease of use?

I hope the original Flip Ultra drops in price now that the Miro is
out. This way we could do interesting social experiments, like handing
out vidcams to everyday people for ethnographic studies.

[videoblogging] media that matters

2008-06-05 Thread Jay dedman
This is a cool festival happening:
http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/8/

The Media That Matters Film Festival is the premier showcase for short
films on the most important topics of the day. Local and global, online and
in communities around the world, Media That Matters engages diverse
audiences and inspires them to take action.

An image captures a feeling,
 A story shares a message,
 A movie becomes a movement.

seems like they are encouraging people to hold screenings in their own town:

The June launch events are just the beginning of a jam-packed year of
Media That Matters. The films stream online in their entirety, broadcast
nationally and are distributed on DVD to educators and activists. Media That
Matters reaches thousands through community screenings around the country.
From classrooms to board rooms, movie theatres to home theatres, hundreds of
events take place throughout the year. Arts Engine staff produce and attend
many screenings, while many more are organized by individuals committed to
change. We provide everything you need to host your own event, and we invite
you to contact us for support in bringing Media That Matters to your neck of
 the woods.

RE: [videoblogging] new flip camera

2008-06-05 Thread jim
I'm not too excited about the new Flip. The only real features it has is
it's smaller (big deal) and it can be charged by usb. And they made it more
expensive, bad move.

The Vado from Creative Labs won't be a true competitor. The sound is bad and
the colors not as good.

RCA small wonder is what I'll test next but I'm going to guess it won't be
as good as the Flip either. Until a serious competitor emerges in that space
the Flip continues to win, especially since they have so much momentum and
buzz.

For making money with short films or online webisodes try
www.storybids.com and get product placement advertising to help offset
