RE: [videoblogging] 7D workflow for PC

2010-04-15 Thread Roger Conant

Adam, its Roger. I use a 7D and usually copy the EOS files to whatever machine
I am using. I am able to import them into Final Cut Pro and Premiere on the Mac
and Edius (Grass Valley) on the PC . I import them no problem, but have to
render them one way or another to play back realtime smooth. That just seems to
be a fact of life with most any of the HD files I use. ( ACHD as well.) On FCP,
I work in a PRORES codec-- mixing various formats in there. The ultimate video
quality is great. BYW though, the files import and render very nicely in
IMovie. Once they are in, they have played fine and no other rendering is
needed.I wind up using I movie alot . The 7D a great camera.( I would look
into the Rebel T2i now.)
It takes getting used to, but I love it. Check out the video P.F. Bentley

No idea about the 7D, but it might be worth a trial.

 1. Pull clips into my raw video folder using the EOS Utility that comes with

 the camera. This works well.

 2. Convert the 1080p h.264 clips to raw uncompressed AVIs with converter

software (I use AVS). This is mainly because Premiere won't import them as

is. Was hoping to find a preset online to download, but haven't seen one

 yet.

 3. Pull them down into the timeline and render the whole thing. If you don't

do this, it's pretty much unusably jerky. Even after this, it's not always

smooth. I have a powerful machine too. I find that if I disable the audio, I

can scrub the footage pretty smoothly, but that just means I have to disable

the video track when I want to cut to the audio. FML.

 4. Cut, render, compress.

So this is a bitch and a half, and I have been reading up on other people's

7D workflows around the web, but 90% of them are on Macs. Has anyone here

been working with 7D footage on a PC?

 Thanks,

 Adam

That's why we created YouTube Direct http://youtube.com/direct, a new tool

clips directly from YouTube users. Built from our APIs, this open source

application lets media organizations enable customized versions of YouTube's

upload platform on their own websites. Users can upload videos directly into

this application, which also enables the hosting organization to easily

review video submissions and select the best ones to broadcast on-air and on

their websites. As always, these videos also live on YouTube, so users can

reach their own audience while also getting broader exposure and editorial

validation for the videos they create.

I havent seen any example of this in the wild yet, but seems to cool to

encourage people to upload videos to a certain project. (though why not just

get people to send a link?)

It's the best video product review/response I've seen. On TV or

ballsed it up. So funny. Particularly knowing that they were

watching it.

But also, having watched your review, then watching the company's

response, I was amazed by how good it was. Sure, they can't act, and

it lacks the fury and pace and hilarity of your review, but its heart

is in the right place and it says Yes, we admit we got it wrong; Look

what we're doing to fix it; we care and we're listening.

And for the CEO to call you, rather than someone from marketing...

amazing. Smarter and more humble than 99% of CEOs, I'd guess

Great stuff!

I think you're right that your rants have more impact on video than in

text - but for various reasons I've seen a lot of video reviews of

smartphones recently - mobile geeks talking about things they're happy

or not happy with - and none of them were remotely as entertaining as

yours. I can't imagine any of them getting a call from a CEO. It's

As it turns out the video made it's way all around the company

 letter from their lawyers.

But it turns out they really do care about their products and

customers, and really do listen, so they seriously took it as

 constructive criticism.

So not only was my critical blog well received, I got a lengthy call

from none other than the CEO, thanking me for the blog and raising the

admitted they could have done the product better and most importantly

[videoblogging] Vlog Portal or Individual Sites

2007-01-12 Thread Roger Penguino
Just recently started following vlogging and want to participate in
the community. Several sites and personalities which interact in this
forum have inspired me to become involved in joining the medium. Have
several ideas for areas which are currently off the radar. Since I'm a
Psychology major interested in counseling family/marriage/dating and
such, thought it would be cool to have blog and wiki which would offer
ideas, and tips. Sites out there today are about the business of
dating, finding partners or offering paid help. Video blogging seems
to be a create medium with community enough to help each other in the
parts which are awkward about approaching someone, dating or keeping
the flame of a relationship going a long time. Other ideas include
personal vlog, vlog about experiences as a Brazuca, which is a
Brazilian expat in the US and technology, just to name a few.
Anyway, obviously I want to start small and then grow into those
areas, the thing I can't decide is whether to keep them seperate sites
or have somewhat of a personal vlog portal, ala Josh Leo. Like perhaps
a WordPress powered site with each category being a seperate blog.
Some of these topics may have overlap and other like the Brazuca idea,
might actually be in another language, so it could be by itself. Ideas
are welcome as to how it might work better for the audience and for
myself in administrating all vlogs. I mean who knows, maybe I could
end up like TWIT, but for love and relationships... :)

Yeah in theory theres nothing to stop multiple cams being used at the

I've been simultaneously capturing two 720x480, 60i, DV camcorders
via firewire on a PC for 3D with no problems, but I have a quite
*fast* PC. I also have to use _two_ separate firewire cards. I've
never tried three at once.
I have had minimal luck trying this with USB cams, and believe me, I
have tried :-) Usually, my computer just crashes :-)
I use GraphEdit to do this... downloadable from a variety of websites.
Keep in mind, this does not genlock or clock-sync cameras. To genlock
cameras, you have to genlock the cameras, themselves, or figure out a
way to clock-sync them or at least monitor the sync via a separate
video output or LANC connection, and that will eventually drift. I use
a tool called a Sync Shepherd: www.ledametrix.com/lcdsync/ to monitor
the sync, but on that same website there is a tool called a LANC
Shepherd, if you have LANC, that actually can give you a good degree
of sync at power-up (but again, that would drift in time).
Simultaneous firewire capture to a computer does not insure frame
sync, even with clock-synced cams, although I get perfect frame sync
most of the time. I have to check it every time. Syncing to better
than 1/500th of a second can be important for 3D, but depending on
your intentions, it may not be necessary.
You can find firewire webcams, but you would not be able to
clock-sync them or monitor the sync, because you need a separate video
output or LANC to do that.

Actually, those would not be clock-controlled, anyway... I've never
tried to use two firewire webcams. It might be fun to try, but I've
never seen the point in using them since I have DV camcorders to work
with.
You'll still need separate firewire cards with a PC for simultaneous
capture.
Of course, if you are not doing 3D, accurate syncing is probably not
a huge issue, anyway, for DV captures.

from him... that's one good thing about moderating comments
(WordPress), and I can even have the last word ;-) Hey, it's my
website... that is an option, if it gets too bad. I almost stopped his
original comment when I first read it... but couldn't pass a good
opportunity to preach a little about videoblogging ;-)

[videoblogging] Take a Hike

2005-09-08 Thread Roger
I like the idea of recording yourself while walking, like many of the
videobloggers are doing, but why not point a camera at your head _and_
another one at your subject?
http://www.puppetkites.net/?p=23
Hey... this way, you don't even have to say anything, since a
picture says 1,000 words ;-)
I'll let you in on a secret... I recorded these at different times...
same trail, different times. It still worked, but doing it all
simultaneously might be more effective, at least in many cases.
