Oops sorry I think I just sent an empty message. Yeah the limit is 230,400 pixels for mpeg4 on ipod, rather than 480x480, so resolutions like the following will work: 720 x 304 - 2.35:1 624 x 336 - 1.85:1 624 x 352 - 16:9 512 x 384 - 4:3 Ive tried 624x352 and 512x384 ones to the TV and they look nice. Yeah the fact this doesnt apply to H264 is ironic but technically logical, since h264 takes more decoding power. ...and the PSP doesn't play larger than 480? So basically there's a one size fits all solution for iPod and PSP... mp4 and 480 x whatever tall? I think I saw the details here somewhere... wish the PSP did higher too. I'm really hopefull that as more and more portable hardware devices come online some sort of standard evolves. Re: [videoblogging] Re: High def resolutions on the ipod
Yes, it's actually very simple... apple has a simple bookmark function not to mention rankin on the ipod for mp3's when you resync you can easily see what you marked and... if they put permalinks in itunes you could comment... stupid apple... oh, but also they disabled rankings and bookmarks on videos on the ipod. So... as for the meta info... i'm hoping an info button will evolve to switch between the video view and an info view... but both these things while very important to us have a long way to go... I think we are now... long over do for a portable media group to start lobbying the industry and pushing specs, designs... whatever we can do... Pushing standards and specifications in this manner is going to be a long, long uphill battle... but it's important. A large part of what makes microcontent/ social media work are these two features that offer basic context and reciprication. -Mike On Dec 11, 2005, at 10:18 PM, Enric wrote: --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Meiser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ...and the PSP doesn't play larger than 480? [videoblogging] Re: High def resolutions on the ipod
No, Sony deliberately limited the PSP, you cannot play video files from memorystick that are the actual resolution of the screen. The limit is something like the equivalent of 320x240, so probably only 76800 or so pixels allowed. Sony probably do this to give people a reason to buy UMD videos for the PSP, as they work at full res. With older firmware they didnt even allow H264 off the memorystick, but they relented on that one. Apparently another problem is framerate, it wants 29.97fps movies which isnt very nice for people whose video is PAL. Couple that with the silly filename issue, and the 'need to do something special to the atom structure of the mp4' issue, and it makes the whole PSP thing much more of a nightmare than it need be. When I get a new TV for Christmas I will evaluate how ipod with 480x272 clip compares to same clip on ipod at 624 x 352. Yeah the fact this doesnt apply to H264 is ironic but technically logical, since h264 takes more decoding power. Steve of Elbows yeah, rock, thanks for the info :) this is great news btw, so... I've been experimenting with the ipod... asking myself the basic question... is this a novelty, or is it a practical device... so far my thoughts are very positive -the biggest issue is issue lack of content, obviously, it's the early adopters problem, we need more compatible content. Personally I especially need greater ease in bringing my favorite vlogs to the platform... but secondarily (for me anyway) music videos, tv shows, movies... etc, etc.. -the biggest detrimental suprise... itunes SUCKS... for some reason... it didn't do this so much with my old 3rd gen it locks up and freezes A LOT... it seems to be the files, 30mb, 200mb, 500mb, even 1 gig video files seem to make it unstable ... it's freaking unstable bloatware... even if it's not crashing it sucks up all my system resources when syncing slowing down my entire system... this is COMPLETELY unnecissary... it's just amazingly bad software... of course I'm running 10.3 on my media server... so I hope when I upgrade to 10.4 it'll be much more stable. The overall thing though, is that as a tool for watching and playing back on the TV I do think it has great potential... the screen and ease of use, both with TV and just watching content on it is superb... the screen is crystal clear... though there were a few technical glitches with sound and a couple crashes from playing back all the 100's of random mp4's I had on my hard drive from the beginning of time. BTW, when the ipod crashes it is very quickly restarted, and I think it's just an issue of odd very uncommon mp4's, early mp4's. Only time will tell. In fact.. so the first thing I did was go by a $17 13ft AV cable from Radio shack and plug the ipod into the TV... it was very useful for playing back blogs on the TV as I sat with my feet up and worked with my laptop... didn't even need a remote with the long cable, though certainly that will make it better. Bottom line... I think barring itunes problems... the content will come... and it's the ubiquity and convenience of having your latest vlogs always at hand that will make the ipod a success... it's is to video, what the very first walkman was to audio... who knew kids would wander around with headphones back then, who knew adults would carry music around between the office, the home and listen to it in the car as they are now... We as of yet don't know how portable video will fit into our lives. We guess... the subway, el, public transit, the plane... standing in line at the DMV... perhaps it'll follow the portable gaming platforms, perhaps it'll be picked up by older generations faster than the portable gaming platforms perhaps it'll become like a video communications tool... perhaps it'll be simply for quick entertainment, like a music video... perhaps short news clips will be popular... we don't know yet, but I'm betting portable video will be no less if not more profound than portable audio, and portable gaming were before it. -Mike --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Michael Meiser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Howdy all, I thought some of you might find this interesting.
