Thanks for the links! I like the way greybox looks, functions and is
called. I'm now thinking of implementing greybox. I'll see if I can
implement a pluggable structure so different [x]box scripts can be

Re: [videoblogging] Re: lightbox for Video

2006-04-26 Thread Joshua Kinberg

We used to use this technique to display video on FireAnt.tv, but we
decided to scrap that method for a number of reasons. It ended up
being a rather confusing interface, it often caused problems in
different browsers, and it made it harder for people to link directly
to videos to bookmark them, etc.

Just my opinion...

with the current version of lightbox, the link is just to the image... if your browser can't handle it it just displays like a normal linked image, can't the same thing be done for video?

yeah, if I was actually a WordPress user, I would prob be doing some plugins ;-)I'd do one plugin called MediaHandler and this would take care of several approaches to presenting media in a blog. I once built a plugin (using this name) for htmlarea. Been thinking of building one for tinymce. Do you think that would make sense? So it can be used on a variety of blog engines?

2006-04-26 Thread David Howell

I'm using a plugin for Wordpress on my site called Falbum to display
my photos. It pulls my photos from Flickr and creates a gallery. You
can see it in action at http://www.davidhowellstudios.com/photos/

I wouldnt be surprised at all if this same plugin could be adapted to
pull thumbs to videos.

the idea of modal windows like the lightbox script isnt a bad one just because the FireAnt approach didnt work well enough. I remember it and it did crash my browser on occasion... it slid up and down and was prob trying to do too much with the general idea.
i do like the lightbox approach because when i am watching a video, i like to focus on the video. dimming out the rest of the screen really helps cut down on the noise of a site and it makes me absorb the video content better... makes sense to me. though, i also sometimes like to have a popup video opened so i can browse and watch. it usually depends on the type of content and my mood.

the idea of modal windows like the lightbox script isnt a bad one just because the FireAnt approach didnt work well enough. Just stating my opinion on using this method on our site for a while and why we switched to a different technique. Take it or leave it.
The biggest problem in my eyes was that there was no visible video permalink appearing in the browser address bar to copy-paste. I think people generally expect that when they want to link to something or bookmark it. Again... simple observations from using this technique on our site.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: lightbox for Video

2006-04-26 Thread robert a/k/a r
Okay, help me understand what's going on here, obviously I joined the conversation late.

Initially I thought the idea of a new wordpress plugin was being kicked around, so i jumped in with my thoughts that's i'd like it to work similarly to how Sull presents in vlogdir (see attachment in my earlier mail).

Then Josh Leo's indication was that the wordpress plugin was already in the works and that I should have seen that information in earlier mails (which i did not).

Then Enric confirmed such a plugin was iin the works and would kindly notify me offlist as i requested. cool, so far.

The David posts his new cool js, which btw also works seamlessly in safari.

Then sull indicates no wordpress plugin iin the works on his end.

Okay, this would mean possible Enric is building one.

Bottom line is, whether wordpress plugin or js as David proffered, I'd be interested presenting video on my wordpress blog as done by Sull in vlogdir (would also want to have a detach (to pop up an indy window and terminate the coolio page dimming event) and one or two other little conveniences.

Could someone recap what's in the works and what would be possible if a competent geek were to have a few free cycles to hack a solution.

I'd might kick in a few baht, or share/match, if others want to
commission such a wordpress plugin.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: lightbox for Video

2006-04-26 Thread Josh Leo

Lightbox is what Sull uses on vlogdirI suggested making a wordpress plugin or other script to make lightbox work with video similar to vlogdir, enric has volunteered to work on it and that is where we are at...

[videoblogging] Re: lightbox for Video

2006-04-26 Thread Enric

Well, I'll be implementing the lightbox capability in vPIP. Probably
available next week. I'm sure others will too -- competition is good
for all.

The first version will be just the standard lightbox capabilty. I'll
put in additional features as you've requested here, Robert, in
future releases.
