I'm not sure about FCE, but on FCP, if you click help in the menu on
the top, the drop-down includes an entry for Final Cut Pro User's
 Manual.

It opens up in the Preview application, so if you want to, you can
have the manual to look at and the FCE application open and operable
 at the same time.

That's the first place you should look, because they have to go
through every aspect of the program that's available to you. If there
isn't one for FCE, or you breeze through it, THEN you should check out
 books or whatever.

 gurus
  out there:

  1. what's a good beginner's resource for learning Final Cut Express?
Though it's an Express version, there's a lot more there than
 the Windows
Movie maker that I'm used to!
  2. Can Final Cut Express capture stuff from my mac book pro's
videocam? And ... how? I can do it in iMovie, but couldn't figure
 it out in
  FCE.

  Thanks!

what's a good beginner's resource for learning Final Cut Express?
Though it's an Express version, there's a lot more there than

Editing Techniques with Final Cut Pro by Michael Wohl is an excellent
introduction to both Final Cut Pro and Editing Aesthetics.

Cheers,

David.

I'm not a mac user, but I got a used copy of this book based on David's
recommendation. The editing aesthetics chapters were very very very
valuable. The first couple chapters have nothing to do with what buttons
to push, but editor's job, film language, editing patterns, and preparing to
edit. This was just the type of guidance I've been trying to find and now
comes the fun of applying the principles ... B
