I just tried eyespot. I don't hear any audio on my clips including
the sample ones provided. Is there something I should be doing?

2006-03-28 Thread JD Lasica
Steve of Elbows asked:

With that in mind I have a question about this mashup stuff. Is there
any particular partnering organisation that was the primary driving
force for this mashup stuff, does one of them have such things as one
of its core aims? I dont know if Im wording the question right, I
guess I am interested in whether this is something that will be
expanded upon in future, and whether its in the form of a new
website/service/social network thing, or as part of an existing thing
like ourmedia? Because I want to know who the right people and groups
are to talk to about this in future.

Well, yes. Outhink, which sponsored this mashup event, is intent on
creating a rich and deep mashup marketplace and remix center for both
licensed and unlicensed works: video, music, audio, etc.

Ourmedia will be helping with the effort. I'm very excited about the
possibilities here.

I know sull has previously said he's jazzed by the idea, and now Steve
of E. has expressed an interest in this emergent phenomenon. If
there's anyone else who wants to get involved with the mashup
movement, give me a holler. It will take some time, but I think it'll
happen by fall or thereabouts.

Cheers for the info :)

I'll bring up the subject again later this year when vjcentral is in a
position to be involved in some capacity, and Ive had more time to
experiment with drupal.

There *IS* a way to get an embedded player. Every one of the videos in

Oh it will scale. It's built to scale in a big way.

The team that built eyespot (myself included) also built the content
delivery infrastructure for mp3.com, where we used to stream 11
terabytes of data per day.

We're prepared for a lot of traffic. :)

It's a slick service indeed. Too bad there is no way to get an
embeded player so I can post on my own blog...it's restricted to their
site. I can email it to a friend, or send it to their cell phone.

Some fades/transitions would be sweet, but :) that's a little 'pie
in the sky'

Oh it will scale. It's built to scale in a big way.

The team that built eyespot (myself included) also built the content

We're prepared for a lot of traffic. :)

[videoblogging] Re: Video mashup mania

2006-03-27 Thread Steve Watkins
Greetings,

Good stuff :) The vision of a grassroots marketplace emerging that
brings bands and visual remixers together is nice, something I support
strongly, and something that has come up from time to time on
VJforums. Plenty of VJs just want to do live stuff, some are part of
AV groups so already have music, but there seem to also be plenty of
VJs who fit right into the mashup culture. So it been a dream for a
few years of getting more collaboration between bands, labels and VJs.
However not much has been done to facilitate this so far.

So when I found out about video blogging, I was fascinated with the
parallels, on many levels, between VJing and videoblogging, in terms
of source material, remixing, tools, techniques and the final result.
And I have been a lot more hopeful that online media / videoblogging
etc groups would be more likely to be able to actually build the
online and offline relationships needed to facilitate sane and easy
collaboration between different sorts of artists distributors.

Anyway I have been unable to contribute much to this cause myself,
chronic lack of time. Im now a bit out of date with the current online
mashup community etc. I would like VJCentral VJForums to be part of
some sort of mashup network, as there is a subsection of the VJ
community that would surely like to be a part of this stuff. VJCentral
is currently being slowly redeveloped so that a new version will
emerge using drupal and having the ability to harness lots of the web
stuff thats appeared over the last few yeears (blogging, tags, video
etc). Also VJCentral as an organisation has not really formally
existed in the past, so hasnt done much networking or attempts to
forge partnerships with other organisations. This year we are hoping
this will change, and it strikes me that once we have a org setup and
a new system powering the web side of things, we would like to talk to
orgs like Ourmedia and Outhink to see if there is the possibility of a
mutually beneficial partnership in areas where there is common interest.

So to repeat myself with a bit more detail, VJCentral has some users
who would be interested in one or more of the following:

Making videos for bands/musicians/labels ( also VJing live for them
if appropriate)
Making video clips/scenes/graphics for other people to use
Using clips from other peoples video
Watching mashups created by other people
Remixing mashup culture in general
A range of economic options from free to fee
A range of copyright etc options from public domain and CC to full
copyright exclusivity stuff.

And probably some other stuff Im not thinking of right now, certainly
I keep thinking there are loads of VJing software/hardware tools that
certain kinds of videobloggers and mashers could use to have a lot
more fun positive results, and certain VJs who could use help
harnessing the new online media realities that have emerged in the
last few years.

Cheers

Two weeks ago there was what I think may turn out to be a significant
milestone in the world of video mashups. It didn't receive any mention
on this list (because we've all been running around like crazy), but I
thought some of you may want to know about it.

Shortly before the South by Southwest Music Festival, Outhink, IODA
(the Independent Online Distribution Alliance) and Ourmedia joined
forces to sponsor a video mashup event. Five indie music labels agreed
to have one of their bands' songs used as the music track for a video
 mash-up.

I invited a half-dozen videobloggers from this list to participate,
and Ryanne Hodson, Josh Leo, Steve Garfield, Annaliese Rittershaus and
I wound up producing 2- to 5-minute video shorts. The rules were
minimal: grab whatever video footage or photos you've shot, or public
domain or CC-NC licensed material, and mix into a visual collage that
 works with the music.

We then showed them to the bands and labels, and they were blown away.
So was I. I was especially fascinated by the three different
treatments of the same song by three vloggers.

As I told The Herms, why pay a director $100,000 to make a music video
when you can get talented vloggers to do it free, or cheap? Outhink
hopes to facilitate a media remix marketplace that brings together
different constituencies -- say, a band looking for a
