sure, but that still requires you to use itunes. they could simply offer
a non-ad streamed version alongside  the ad supported version. let the
consumer decide if it's worth a buck or two to skip the ads. it would be
an interesting experiment at least.

they already do offer that on itunes, I think making freedownloads of shows with commercials makes sense, but the concept that people would skip over commercials also makes sense...so i guess this is the way they ensure most viewers see the ads

There is no such thing as "non-skippable". The Internet will always
find ways of routing around "problems". I'm sure someone will come up
with a re-streamer that will offer the same thing sans commercials. Sure,
it won't be legal but that hasn't stopped the Internet before. 

If ABC offered the same thing without commercials for a small fee that would be
a nice alternative. Let the consumer choose if they want the ads or not.
