Re: [videoblogging] Videoblogging book is cancelled

Okay, chiming in...I've only written for O'Reilly. I don't work for them(!). However, from everyone I've met who's even remotely affiliated with the company, I can say they're a great group.Yes, they've recognized vlogging (semi-obvious since they started the process of publishing a book on it). I highly doubt they're going to work with others. They had/have the pioneers. Where else would they go? Why would they go somewhere else? I just don't see it.I think they were honest and didn't see it as a profitable market given the timeframe. I can guarantee that it was not an easy decision to make. People inside the company had devoted themselves to the book, too.I do believe that when they choose to pursue the video blogging market, they'll look to the same people. Wouldn't you?Hey, if I get the opportunity to do a second edition, I'd be ecstatic. (Shameless plug: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/digitalvideohks/ ). (Hey, I did say shameless.)And, yes, a vlog handbook would be very cool.Best,JoshOn Sep 29, 2005, at 12:09 PM, Michael Sullivan wrote: i can only speculate i dont think at all that its too early. they have recognized vlogging maybe Joshua Paul can chime in. maybe it means that they are going to work with others... maybe an updated  'podcast' book that covers video. maybe they will instead go with a different theme and do a new overall grass roots media book and include vlogging chapters maybe they will come out with new DV Hacks edition. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dvideopg/ I think that if we do make a printed book, a vlog handbook would be perfect.  one of those small pocket sized books then we can hand them out for free.    sullOn 9/29/05, Chris Baudry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We found out that O'reilly has cancelled the Videoblogging hacks book. The word from Chuck, the editor, is that their marketing departmentdetermined that this book and 2 others were too risky financially. Videoblogging is all about using the internet as a delivery mechanism
for video. Why abandon it now? I agree with digitalbuddha. DIY. Find
an editor who will work with you and submit what you got to lulu.com
for on-demand publishing. You can have an online version too, to
supplement what you publish, and add updates as they come.

agreed.
We are waiting for the final cancellation agreement from O'reilly.
Then we can figure out the next step.

The good news is that we have a videoblogging book more than half complete.
I believe we can make it an online community project AND get it
published in paper format.

What it means is the books on podcasting already in the channels aren't
meeting sales projections which means taking a risk on a book with a
smaller market doesn't make any sense from the publishers financial
investment perspective.

It doesn't mean there's not a market for it, but it does mean there's
limited interest in the topic in traditional channels. One approach you
could take is to contact the people at a company like No Starch, which
tends to take risks on books with cult followings and more niche topics.
The advantage to that route is getting access to the traditional
retail channels (through O'Reilly, ironically) and if negotiated
correctly, you could easily retain the electronic distribution rights.

 what does this mean?

Answers are unclear at this point.
We are still negotiating the terms of the cancellation.
we should know more by Friday.
One possibility is to make it an online community project...a growing
book that everyone contributes to over time. Might even be better
since we can add hyperlinks and screencasts.
We have over half the book complete.

No bad feelings towards O'reilly...its a business choice on their
 part.
Reguardless of what happens, we'll make the work we've done help the
people who are leaning to videoblog.

please send any questions my way.
