Hi,

A patron came in yesterday looking for a film that she saw about five years
ago.
It was a documentary about some Native Americans who were suing the government
for pushing them off of their land.
She said that there were two women in the film and that they might have been
mother and daughter.
Does anyone recognize this film?

Hi, all,

Next spring, we will be moving into a brand new library! Yay for us. I'm
starting to look at opening day collections for DVD and CDs. Not that I think
we'll have any funds for it, but just in case. For films, along with Academy
Award winners (which I know can be controversial), AFI lists, National Film
Registry, is there anything else to look at? This can also include television,
Spanish films, and information/documentaries. Thanks a lot!

films as opposed to feature length documentaries. Some times the term feature
film can mean different things so just checking.

The City of Chicago has announced it will holding a parade for the Championship
Blackhawks that will end at Grant Park in the South loop and start at the
United Center West of the loop. Bottom line getting to McMormick place is going
to be VERY ugly as hundreds of thousands of people maybe more will be going
into and leaving downtown Chicago. There is a commuter train from downtown to
McCormick, the Metra which many of the revelers will take but you will likely
be reverse commuting. I suspect this is the best option provided you leave for
McMormick before I would guess 2PM. Coming back from McCormick should not be an
issue on the train ( Metra) I would avoid cars and buses.
Those going to VRT dinner should try walking from their hotel or possibly a
subway. It will be a madhouse.
If you are flying in on Friday I strongly advice you to take blue line subway
to downtown and if you must go to McCormick walk over to Millennium park Metra
strop (literally two blocks) Just stay off the roads and use trains. Again you
will be reverse commuting ( going out before or during parade and returning
after from a station that no one but ALA people will be at)
Anyone in Chicago can feel free to add details and correct this

[Videolib] ALA Notable Videos for Adults

2013-03-28 Thread Julia Churchill
[Please excuse cross-postings. -- JC]

Greetings Media Librarians,

The Notable Videos for Adults Committee has three vacancies to fill this year.
We aim for a balanced mix of librarians from academic, public and special
libraries that work with media and serve adult populations. We are looking for
three librarians from an academic, special, or public library to balance out
the team.

This is an opportunity to serve on a rewarding and enjoyable professional
committee at the national level. Members of the committee must be members of
the American Library Association (ALA) and the Video Round Table (VRT). Please
note that representatives or employees of video producers or distributors are
not eligible to serve.

Each member will serve a term of two years, with a maximum number of
consecutive terms not to exceed two, for a total of four years of service.

All committee members are required to:

* Be members of ALA and the Video Round Table (VRT),

* Attend ALA Midwinter for two consecutive years (Seattle and Philadelphia),

* View, evaluate and mail a substantial amount of videos leading up to ALA
Midwinter. Last year, over 60 titles were nominated.

For complete information about the committee, please visit our web page:

http://www.ala.org/vrt/notablevideos

If you are interested in volunteering for the committee, please respond
directly to me by April 1, 2012. A decision on Notable Committee invitations
will be made shortly thereafter in consultation with the Chair of the Video
Round Table. Please indicate your membership status with ALA and VRT, your
ability to commit to attending ALA Midwinter, and include additional
information regarding your experience with videos (i.e., selection, collection
development, reviewing, etc.).

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank You,

Julia Churchill

Subject: Re: [Videolib] Blu-ray/DVD combo packs

Hi,

Because we are a public library system with 20 different locations,
Blu-Ray combo packs are handled two different ways. For the branch
libraries, we separate them, catalog each under the appropriate bib
record and shelve them separately.Basically, the decision was made
to separate because customers don't always have a Blu-ray player and
because of the replacement cost issues. Some of the smaller member
libraries (e.g., Riverside Library) have chosen to keep the combo packs
as is. Each member library purchases their material and controls their
own collection.

At our Headquarters, Blu-rays are shelved away from the main DVD
collection and each is housed in a security box. Right now, only four
of our branch libraries have small Blu-ray collections and each is doing
something different for security. One branch pulls all the discs and
holds behind the circ desk. Another uses the security cases and a two
leave the Blu-rays in the boxes like DVDs.

Best,
Paula

If it hasn't been done to death, how about Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
Very secular.

Also,
Get Crazy. It's got Lou Reed playing a Bob Dylanish singer, Malcolm McDowell
doing the same for Mick Jagger, and a bunch of other rock stars involved in a
New Year's Eve concert. My favorite character is the audience member who enters
costumed as a reefer, then runs out of the theater at the end as a roach (three

[Videolib] borrowing restrictions for movies

2011-06-28 Thread Julia Churchill

Hello everyone,
I would like your opinion on an policy that has bothered me since I took
this job approximately seven years ago. Each year we revisit it and each year
we keep the same policy.

I work in a medium size public library that serves a population of 55,000.
The borrowing policy of the library prohibits patrons under the age of eighteen
from checking out any DVDs or videos. We also charge an Insurance fee of .50
for residents and $1.00 for non-residents per item.

I know what ALA would say about restricting access to these items. However,
this is not a perfect world where parents watch what their children check out
from the library. We have had enough controversy at this library and I don't
think we want any more. Heaven forbid if little Johnny should take home a movie
that shows a breast! We do have a vocal conservative element in the community.

So my question is, what should we do? Keep the policy? Change it to allow
everyone access? I should tell you that because of this policy I buy some
unrated movies and plenty of R rated.

Re: [Videolib] Disc cleaner

2010-11-19 Thread Julia Churchill

We wipe each disc as it comes back to us with a soft cloth. If it is really
scratched we use some liquid car wax I purchased at Walgreens for $3.00 a
bottle. I bought it over a year ago and it is still going strong. The wax fills
in the small scratches. We own over 6,000 discs.

   I hope this is helpful.

Hi, all. In a related question to disc cleaning machines, does anyone
know of a place to get just a liquid cleaner similar to Maxell Disc
Electronic Cleaner? Sometimes, all that's needed is a good washing -
rather than a resanding. I've tried the box stores, library supply
companies, Radio Shack, with no luck. Or, would just water or something
like Windex work?Thanks

Re: [Videolib] Question about buying Blu-Rays

2010-11-16 Thread Julia Churchill
We are buying Blu-Ray now. They are somewhat popular but certainly not as
popular as DVDs. This holiday season I believe the players will start to go
down in price and become more popular. Keep in mind that you can play a DVD on
a Blu-Ray player so really you are just opening up your options by buying a
Blu-Ray player.

It would not bother me if a film was offered in Blu-Ray only. Packaging does
not matter as we will put it in our own packaging.

Subject: [Videolib] Question about buying Blu-Rays

I am dealing with a film where the producer is considering releasing it Blu-Ray
ONLY. It is a very visual film that I imagine will look great, but I also
imagine that will cut down on sales. One alternative is to release a standard
HD Copy but with bare bone boxing Vs the Blu-Ray.

Any feedback on if you would not buy blu-ray or not buy something in generic
box would be appreciated.

You can email me directly if you want.

[Videolib] Opening locked cases

2010-09-21 Thread Julia Churchill
Hello everyone,

We have just discovered that someone is coming in and taking our Juvenile
PS3 games.
It looks like they are taking the games out of the cases and putting the cases
back.
Apparently it is pretty easy to unlock these red/green locked cases.
I looked it up on Google and there were many pages about this. It's easy if you
have a very strong magnet.
I feel that we have taken reasonable precautions, we have a security system as
well as the locks.
I'm disgusted by this. Does anyone have suggestions for better security cases
that cannot be unlocked?
