Re: [Videolib] DVD packaging question
We only replace DVD cases when they're not standard. So for us, ironically enough, the eco-friendly packaging is probably the least eco-friendly, since we discard and replace those with typical dvd cases that adequately protect the material. Re: [Videolib] DVD packaging question
Hi, Are you talking about paper or cardboard sleeves/pockets, or traditional jewel cases for cds. In either case, we would end up repackaging it. If it was for a school or library that was just going to us it in house, and not go anywhere, maybe the sleeve would be ok, but even then, I would see repackaging it just for protecting the disc, making sure that the information on the insert/sleeve was visible, etc. Becky Tatar Periodicals/Audiovisuals Aurora Public Library 1 E. Re: [Videolib] DVD packaging question
We have had a few mistakenly reshelved with CD or CD-ROM collections. Eco-friendly packaging is a great idea, but is it sufficiently rugged for library circulation? Are the sides closed to protect the disk as it travels? What do you think the use will be for for your title? High or low? How will it withstand being put in a book return? Good luck with your good intentions. Re: [Videolib] DVD packaging question
Hi Nellie~ Thank you for your response and questions. I don't think that the packaging I'm considering using is rugged enough for library circulation but it seems that many libraries repackage the DVD in their own sturdy plastic packaging. I think that if filmmakers knew this, they wouldn't bother with all the plastic that comes with the traditional packaging. I can imagine that it could get mistakenly reshelved with CD's but I'll make sure and place a DVD logo on the package. Re: [Videolib] . DVD packaging question (Eileen Torpey)
I believe many of you received DVDs from us in unusual packing. When I started Docs for education I sent the DVDs in envelopes padded with bubble sheath, (made in China) bought from the post office. I got complaints that the casing arrived damaged and DVDs scratched so I started to pack in ordinary envelopes padding the DVDs with used carton cut to fit the DVD, never got a complaint again. Re: [Videolib] DVD Packaging
Ditto to Deg's comments for what we do- Overall, I think the responses will fall into academic and public library categories. Academics tend to pay more, therefore security cases will be more in evidence, and consistency in long term shelving will be evident. Publics have higher circs and original packaging is important - for display. As long as glossy covers are supplied, keep the plastic flimsy cases, and ship in cardboard or recycled material. As long as shipping envelope is sturdy, that is. Just a comment from another distributor. We switched over to the slim line plastic covers because we found that they protected the DVDs much better. They prevent the DVDs from coming loose in the case and sliding around and getting scratched by the middle support of the wider boxes. Returns due to scratches is almost negligible now. Like other libraries, we repackage the DVDs in slimlines and paper covers. We tried covering the paper ones, but they didn't last very long. We also have to rebox the green DVD cases -- the ones with the cut-outs of the recycle logo and film reels. We do keep the original packaging if it's really cool, unique or dreadful to use as examples for marketing and product design. --Heather Heather Cleary Digital Projects and Metadata Librarian Otis College of Art and Design 9045 Lincoln Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90045 Phone 310 665 6926 Website http://blogs.otis.edu/vrclib/ Email hcle...@otis.edu mailto:hcle...@otis.edu From: videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu [mailto:videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu] On Behalf Of CROWLEY, CHRISTINE Sent: Sunday, February 07, 2010 9:13 AM To: videolib@lists.berkeley.edu Subject: RE: [Videolib] DVD Packaging If we have to repackage every dvd we purchase that will add to our costs and time.
