Great group of people. Very helpful, they help you secure rights if available
and they keep you in the loop. I would recommend them any time.

2014-03-17 Thread Jennifer DeJonghe
Hello,
We are using Kanopy in my library. We get the Media Education Films through
them (we got a 3 year license to the entire collection). We used their "Search
and Find" service to negotiate streaming rights and hosting for a title that we
had extremely high usage of on DVD but couldn't find streaming. We've been very
happy with Kanopy so far. I like the admin console very much which lets me see
when things I've licensed will be expiring, see title level usage stats,
invoices, and so on. We are also considering using their hosting service for
items that we already own the rights to. We just don't have the capacity to do
any of our own hosting or rights negotiation in-house at this time. The films
are easily to embed and are mostly all captioned, which is really important
when it comes to online classes.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Re: [Videolib] Kanopy...a footnote

2014-03-17 Thread Olivia Humphrey
Dear Judith

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on distribution. It's important that
filmmakers are engaged in the conversation in a time of rapidly changing
models and markets. I deeply admire the work you are doing in promoting
self-distribution through your consulting service, but it's only fair for
me to respond.

As you recall, Kanopy sold your DVD to 10% of the Australian market, not a
mean feat considering DVD budgets are declining and over half the market
had already purchased it directly from you in previous years. As you know,
we do not offer a DVD distribution service outside of Australia, and our
catalog of nearly 30K films are not in WorldCat as they are only available
on subscription, not in perpetuity.

I would like to say that we are very proud of our model which supports
filmmakers. We offer the best returns in the market, full transparency into
where films are being sold and viewed, and encourage our filmmakers to
connect with end-users so they are more empowered to better understand
their educational audience.

I know your email was sent in a moment of exasperation and wasn't personal
to Kanopy, so thank you for acknowledging that.

Best wishes

Olivia

Listers: I want to soften my previous email and make it clear that my
snarky tone in my previous email was more a product of my general feelings
about catalogue distributors combined with a sleepless night.

Those who know me know that I'm an impassioned advocate of DIY
distribution, not because of any experience with Kanopy per se but because
of the success I achieved rather easily for my own film and then helped
others achieved. (I am not a distributor, but do work as a diy
consultant).

I'd been distributing my film for about 4 years when Kanopy first contacted
me because of an Australian sale, and I had very little contact with them,
other than the disappointing numbers.

I think Olivia and I both wish now that we had had more contact. The world
is changing so rapidly. What was impossible once for filmmakers (diy
distribution) became possible with DVD sales, but now that digital sales
are becoming the norm, things may revert again.

Professionalism is always the best route, and I apologize for not
maintaining that. I do think it would be useful, however, for
distributors, as part of their work with filmmakers, to make clear the
efforts they're putting out for each film.

Re: [Videolib] Kanopy

2014-03-17 Thread Judith Dancoff
Just another useless catalogue distributor in my humble opinion, doing zero
outreach and then with the gall to actually charge a percentage. After
selling hundreds of copies of my film "Judy Chicago & the California Girls"
to institutions in the US and abroad, with many copies to Australia and NZ
(their territory), I unfortunately got tangled up with them for a few years
and could experience, firsthand, their complete ineffectiveness. (I know I
advocate DIY, but I thought--what the hell, if they could bring in non-US
sales I wouldn't otherwise be getting). While I was with them, though, I
sold many more to Australia and NZ than they ever did (still am), and then
would receive their mournful little notes each year about how I'd sold
nothing through them, both DVD and digital. Yeck! Too depressing. I got
out of there fast. Check for yourself their massive lack of success by
going on Worldcat.org, the database of all library holdings on earth, and
looking them up under DVD. All their films will come up with their
enticing 1 and 2 sales.

BTW, people, Faith Fuller of Desktop Documentaries just put up an interview
with me on the process of DIY distribution that you will want to check out:
