sal - this is a long shot but cebu is the name of a
town in the philippines famous for producing musical
instruments.  it has spanish links (late 1500's) and
i'm told they make beautiful instruments:

there's a small, vihuela-like instrument in the
philippines similar to the charango.  name escapes me
at the moment but another case of a 5c. iberian
instrument living abroad under a locally assumed name.

Of course, especially in the 17th c. when the name didn't exist.  An 
instrument is named whatever people are calling it...whether I like it or not.
