I've just read http://blogs.gnome.org/otte/2010/07/27/rendering-cleanup/
and did a quick search in Vim's source. It looks like Vim is affected by
this changes. But I'm not a GTK or GDK programmer. Could someone please
confirm that Vim has to be updated?

Try again without any initialization files by using vim -u NONE -U NONE
