You might want to try "text-style" tabs: for that, ":set guioptions-=e" (without the quotes) then define the 'tabline' option (see :help setting-tabline). 'guitablabel' is not used in that case. I use this, but of course it is not necessarily to everybody's taste. Try it, then if you don't like it you can still go back to GUI-style tabs, defined (IIUC) by the 'guitablabel' option (q.v.) and by the e flag being on in 'guioptions'.
