Are you sure your phone is not somehow locked in landscape orientation?
The only other two explanations I have for this are as follows:
1. You are in fact not doing a clean swipe down but swipe on a diagonal and it
registers as a swipe right which of course would take you to the next message.

Just a quick update. I must admit, I am liking the Apple smart keyboard,
more and more, each day. I found some extremely helpful articles and videos
on how best to use it.
For example, I discovered that iPad Pro 10.5 can be placed in two different
viewing positions; one with the
