If he backed up his iPhone before the upgrade, the data should be
available either in the cloud or on his computer. Still, it's
perplexing that he lost his calendar entires. I've never lost anything
when doing an iOS upgrade.
Find out from him what steps he took when doing the upgrade.

Have him to confirm that all of his approperate calendars have been selected
within the Native Calendar app. The tab for this is at the bottom, second from
the left.
Also have him go into Settings and swipe down to Mail, Contacts Calendars.
Make sure that the settings weren't changed here
