Disappearing contacts

Can anyone suggest a reason why my wife's contacts would simply disappear? She has a new 6S plus and we have added a number of contacts and suddenly this morning they are all gone. Is there a way to restore them from iCloud? Karl __ Karl Smith, Access Technology Consultant
