I do not have any problem like that. Check your mail in settings, notifications
to make sure badges are being shown.

Hi Kirsten,
You must have somehow accidently turned off the badge App Icon. To check
this, go to Settings, Notifications and Mail. Now go into your mail
account and swipe past where you turn on and off Notification Centre and
where you set the type of alert style.
After that Voiceover will say
Thanks all, that's sorted it! Glad I asked now! It was the badge icon in
notifications.
