2 fingers up reads from the top of the screen. 2 fingers down reads down
from the cursor position which could be anywhere on the screen.

If you go to your list of mailboxes, you can do this by hitting the back key
from the inbox list, for example: your third option should be unread. if it is
not, and mine wasn't until I did the following, find edit at the top of the
screen. double tap that and flick down through the
