With all due respect, still after reading this article I see nothing that would
indicate why one wouldn’t be able to advance through the card

The Bank issued me with a new card, a MasterCard, when the change was made.
(The card also has a number beginning with 54. The change was also reflected in
my iTunes, as I provided the info there at that time (in 2016).

The first 4 digits of your card number represent the card type, i. e.
Mastercard, Visa, or Discover. When your bank changed card types, they should
have issued you a new card with a different number

Visa credit card numbers begin with 4, Mastercard with 5, and Discover with 6.
My guess is that you selected Visa while your card starts with a 5, or vice
