You are right about this being a problem with this update. Steve’s observation
is right about it being like a slap back echo. I do wonder if the common
thread is locking the record button.

Yes, it is true, it is a issue that is only real in this WhatsApp update...
all People who have upgraded to this version all have this issue.
I mean, blind people, personal friends, and friends in discussion groups
Now we just need to know if it is an app issue, or accessibility
Haven't had garbling, but sometimes folks get messages that are slow and
have slapback echo. Sounds real funny when it happens.
