walking driving etc.

I have the latest update and i can get all that info, but only in a
step-by-step format and not in a format like driving. I mean that I get the
instructions in a list and not turn-by-turn. When I hit "Navigate"to get
turn-by-turn instructions the app crashes.

Do you have the latest Google maps update that released on February 27, 2014?
Start fresh. Make sure that Google maps is closed from the app switcher. Open
Google maps. On the top left you will see something like directions button.
Then there will be different tops up above like driving transit

Have you cleared out the app switcher?
That sounds more like you don't have enough resources available to run the app.
