They are telling you when you change from compass mode to GPS mode. In other words, When you are standing still, the app is using the internal compass, so it matters which way your phone is facing.
When you start moving, it will go to GPS mode, and tell you the direction you are going based on your recently traveled path. In this mode, it doesn't matter which way your phone is facing.
