I've never seen a start button, but that may be because I got Google maps too
late. Anyhow, the way I plan routes is to use the search button. Is there
another way? Note: I've only used Google maps for walking directions.

Unfortunetly, the latest version of the Google Maps makes it impossible for
you to use the turn-by-turn in Voice Over. As of v1.1 you will not be able
select this button which can't be seen by the Voice Over. Google is aware of

I've found Google Maps to work with VoiceOver with one glaring
