I had this recently, and it had the good grace to offer a clue... a clue one
sets at the outset... and it still took ages to work
it out, but did in the end.
Setting cryptic clues is almost no clue at all.

Depending on his version of the operating system, you can try to restart the
Mac in recovery mode. Hold the command and r keys together at startup and keep
them down. You should be able to access the recovery HD. From there, select,
terminal, from the utilities menu and use the
resetpassword
