I've got automatic updates turned off on my iPhone 8 and so far, I
haven't gotten a single update notice.

Go to settings, general, then iPhone storage. Give it about 30 seconds or so to
refresh the stats, then find the iOS update file and delete it. That is the
only way I know of to get rid of that annoyance. Do keep in mind however, when
the next update of iOS comes out you may have to
