Just tried it on my home screen and it all worked as expected. Did you remember to double tap on the search field to put focus in it and start editing mode? Only then will the keyboard show up and it's on the bottom half of the screen as always. Only other thing I can think of is that maybe you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected and it's turned on in which case the onscreen keyboard won't show up.
