Wi-Fi is faster than most cellular and it doesn't cost you anything, so I leave
It on.
It only uses it if cell service is not available or at a very poor signal.

I'm not really answering your question, but I used it at my mother's in the
mountains where she had very poor cellular reception. When I turned on wi-fi
calling, I could make calls and send and receive text messages, so it was a
life saver!
