Why does switching back to a non-threaded view help after that first pass?
I usually go into the unread folder in my Mail app. I always have
threaded mode on. If I want to go through quickly and delete the
messages and threads I'm not interested in, I'll just flip through the
message list

delete, which, I made, so that it is right above the home button.

sort through, it's a breeze to use Thread view to quickly go and delete, and
for reading those left, using the App Switcher, change back to Individual view.

Speaking off the cuff, I would say that the anser to your question is no.
There is no shortcut to changing how messages are displayed from within the
native iOS 9.x mail client/app.
