Hi Wayne,
it's similar to going home on the iPhone X series. You swipe down and at the
first pop is the control center and the second pop is the notification center.

The technical description is up or down; but your colleague may have just found
that Apple treats
Yes that does work. One finger straight down from the right corner of
the screen will open control center or notifications depending on how
far you go down. It works like home and app switcher in reverse. However
the old way of doing it still works as well with three fingers down from
the top
