Hi again,
I just went into Settings and then Map. Under there I found a setting
for 'Show Parked Location.' This setting needs to be set to on.
Additionally, the notes say that the phone needs to be connected to
either the car's Bluetooth or Carplay stereo for it to work.

Hi,
The finding your car feature is suppose to be automatic when the car
stops and you get out. I do not believe the steps suggested are
correct. The marking of your location is not a IOS10 feature after
all; that was there with IOS9 as well, and maybe even before that.
With that said, I also
Open the Maps app.
Double tap on settings.
Do a one finger flick right, passed transit, satellite, to Mark location.
Double tap.
Then, I assume you will be able to get directions back to that location.
