Thanks, Alex. I had actually gone into audio settings. But I was a bit misled,
because the various voices said dimmed, making me think that I could not
select anything. However, when I selected Kendra, despite being dimmed, it
worked. So I guess is just a little glitch in the system.

I don't know why, but I thought I read somewhere that you are able to assign a
voice to a particular item. So for instance, you have James as your default
voice. But for a specific book, you would like to use Ivona Amy. I thought you
were suppose to be able to do that, but I can't find
Open the book you want to give a different voice. Tap audio settings at the
top, and choose the voice in there. Any customizations you make will apply to
that book only, so you could also assign a faster or slower speech rate, if you
wanted to.
