RE: Uber and Siri?

2016-10-15 Thread Ann M Medlar
Hi all,

A couple of months ago I added Uber to IPhone6 and turned Uber Siri setting on.

I never used Uber but wondering how do I pay for a ride?

I did not enter a credit card number so any information appreciated.

Can I practice on App without really booking a ride?

Thanks,

Ann

RE: Uber?

2016-10-15 Thread Rob
Since I already have an account with Uber, I cannot verify the sign up process.
I expect that when you open the Uber app, you will find a "Sign Up" button on
the first screen. But I think it would probably be easier to complete the sign
up process on a computer if you have one. Whether you sign up in the app or on
a computer, the information you enter will be the same.

To sign up using a computer, go to www.uber.com and look for the "Ride With
Uber" heading. The "Sign Up" link is below the heading.

You will enter your email address, first name, last name, and create a
password. When you finish creating your account, I expect that you will
proceed to the screen where you enter your method of payment. You can enter
your credit card information or you can enter a PayPal account.

If you sign up using a computer, you will want to choose the "Sign In" button
when you open the Uber app. Then enter your email address and password.

You can enter a pickup location and a destination. Then you can double-tap the
"Fare Estimate" button. I don't recommend actually requesting a ride until you
are ready to go on your first trip using Uber.

There are some podcasts that describe using the Uber app with VoiceOver. A
podcast on applevis.com at the link below describes setting up an account and
requesting a ride.

http://www.applevis.com/sites/default/files/podcasts/AppleVisPodcast997.mp3

Once you request a ride and the driver accepts the trip, you will find the
driver's name, his model of car, and an "Options" button. The "Options" menu
includes buttons that allow you to send a text message to the driver or call
the driver. This is useful if you need to tell the driver exactly where you
are.

Requesting info about Apple Beta Test lists

2016-10-15 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I recently acquired an iPad Mini 4 to add to my growing family of iDevices.
I have decided to beta test IOS 10 and above on my new 128 GB Mini 4. I am
aware of one list for beta testing. However, I would like to make sure I am
proficient as possible in all things beta. So I would appreciate it if you
would provide the addresses of known Apple beta test lists that would be
beneficial for blind testers to join.

Thanks in advance,

Merv

Storage issue

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has tried helping me so far.
I really do appreciate it. I am going to try the suggestions here in a
little bit.

However, I just realized something, and it shocked me.

I have a 16 gig Iphone. When I update it to the latest update, it is
usually over WIFI. I mention this, just in case it's important.

I went in to storage just a bit ago. I noticed when I got in to manage
storage, that I only have a little over a gig left on my phone. I don't
understand why this is. I don't have a lot of apps, and the ones I do
have are small in size. I have maybe 30 photos on my phone. Some of
which I would like to delete, but of course I will need sighted assistence.

I know that this had to happen recently, because just about a week, or 2
ago, I had close to 6 gigs free. It's interesting that this has just
happened to me, because last night a good friend of mine was telling me
about the same issue.

So what the heck could be going on?

And how can I fix it?

I removed a couple of apps I rarely use. But of course, that didn't make
much of a difference.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Storage issue

2016-10-15 Thread Rajmund
Hi Terri,
I appreciate that this may be beyond your technical capabilities, and I do
understand that. However, I would be more than happy to have a 1 to 1 with you
off list, if you need guidance. Having said that, back up the phone to iCloud,
erase all content and settings under settings, general, reset, then when the
phone reboots, restore it from the iCloud backup. This has not let me,, and
anyone else that has tried it down.

Hey Terri. If you decide to go back to Sirius XM again, if you don't need

Some of

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Information about some IOS applications

2016-10-15 Thread Richard Turner
I don't think SayText is available any longer. It was not very good to begin
with.
I have not tried the others. Two of them are essentially the same app for
$29.99 for on the fly OCR. I would rather use a designated OCR app that takes a
photo of a sign or document and reads it so you can save the results if you
want. The best for that is KNFB Reader, though it is $99.99.
You could also try TextGrabberor Prizmo for around $10.
But, KNFB Reader is the easiest to use.

RE: Amazon Video

2016-10-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terri,

I know David answered most of your questions, but I just thought I put in a
thought regarding the consumption of media whether it's music or movies/TV
Shows. Of course Amazon may sometimes have something that is not on iTunes or
maybe a movie or TV Show is cheaper there. However, I know you have an Apple TV
as do I and in my opinion I don't see a reason why I would start buying movies
or TV shows from Amazon which means in order to watch them I have to possibly
Airplay them to my Apple TV. Again, somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I
was under the impression that there was no Amazon Video app for the Apple TV.
If there is and you can consume anything you buy this way it's of course no
problem, not too much difference whether I use the iTunes app on my Apple TV or
the Amazon Video app except maybe SIRI integration. I am in Canada where Amazon
Prime does not include any free videos so there isn't much reason here to have
an Amazon Prime membership.

This also relates to your other post regarding Sirius XM. I know Sirius has
some Sports channels and comedy and so on which you may not get with Spotify
which is primarily music, but you said you also have a Tune In subscription for
their Pro service so you may get some of this already. Everybody nowadays
competes for the end user's buck and often the service offering is very similar
and having two services means a lot of duplication. I understand Spotify is
also very good, I used to have a subscription but got rid of it because I'm a
big Sonos user and at the time the Spotify integration with Sonos was very
basic. This has now been fixed and in fact Sonos is rolling out updates soon
which allow you to control your Sonos system from the Spotify app which means
if you are big time into Spotify this is great because you get the full Spotify
experience and are able to play to any of your Sonos players from inside the
app rather than using the Sonos controller where you get access to your Spotify
subscription from inside it. I really hope Sonos and Apple can come to an
agreement so that this will at some point be available in the Music app and
maybe one day when SIRI integration withthird-party apps is expanded and
includes other app categories I can have the experience where I simply say "Hey
SIRI, play the best songs from 1988 on Sonos in the living Room" either using
my iPhone or the Apple TV and Apple Music will play the songs with the music
app sending it to my Sonos system. I personally think that especially if there
are two people involved as in you are a couple or have another family member,
the Apple Music family subscription for $14.99 a months is an awesome deal and
while I still have my Deezer subscription which was paid as an annual
subscription, I am not sure if I'll renew again. Both my wife and I use Apple
Music a lot and on our iPhones we only get our recommendations and all that
because of the family plan. Now I just wish Apple would offer this $14.99 plan
at a bit of a discount if you prepaid for the entire year, $15 for a year is
$180 so maybe they could offer it for $149.99 if you prepay for the year
although of course this comes off my iTunes account so if I buy $200 worth of
iTunes gift cards at 20% off when I can find them I get an entire year's Apple
Music service not at $14.99 a months but effectively at $11.99 a month, so for
around $144 a year.

Best regards,
Sieghard

The app itself is free. How much free content you get depends on whether
you're a member of Amazon Prime. If you're a Prime member, Amazon
provides a good deal of free content from its video library. If you're
not a Prime member, I don't believe the app offers anything in the way
of free content. In either case, Amazon has a selection of movies and TV
shows that you can purchase or rent.

It depends on the movie or TV show. Some seasons might only cost $15-20,
some might be more expensive. You should visit Amazon's site and look at
prices for Instant Video, which is what you're looking for when it comes
to the app. Unfortunately, you can't use the app itself to purchase
content, although you can use it to search for it.

Ipad questions

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

Last night I was wanting to add an app to my Ipad. I know I have done
this before of course, because I added apps on there when I first got it.

However, I now can't seem to get it to work for me,. If I type in the
search box, or dictate, I seem to get suggestions. If one of the
suggestions happens to be what I want, when I tap on it, it's then put
in the search box.

I just can't seem to download what I want, and I don't understand this.
I haven't tried looking for another app.

By the way, when I do a search for this app, it will bring up apps. Just
not what I want.

What could be going on with this?

Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't know if this will make a difference or not, but I just updated
my Ipad this morning. I was searching last night.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

All shows and movies can be streamed and so they won't take up any extra
space. They can be downloaded for offline listening/viewing but this
isn't the default.

It is quite accessible. The only issue you'll have a problem with is
their list of premium channels for renting content. Instead of reading
the name of the channel, VoiceOver just says "opens the landing view."

Hi Terry. How are you? To answer yoru question about Pages, keynote,a nd so on.
Pages is like word document. Is where you type info on it if you wnat to write

Amazon Video

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello again everyone,

A friend was telling me about Amazon Video. They were saying that the
app was free, that you only pay for what you download.

Is this the case?

Is it pretty reasonably priced to rent a movie?

They said you can buy movies as well.

Can you purchase tv shows?

I would imagine that this would be pretty expensive, though?

And I would imagine all that video would take up a lot of room?

Does anything you purchase, have to stay on your device?

And of course, is this app pretty accessible?

Any thoughts, or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: iTunes No Longer Recognizing my iPhone

Ari and others,

I finally solved the problem this morning and your hunch was actually pretty
close to the mark. The Windows 10 machine wasn't seeing the Apple Mobile
Display driver. It wasn't listed in Device Manager, in spite of the fact that I
uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. However, as you say there are articles
about how to do this and, with a bit of hunting for the driver, I was able to
reinstall it from my hard drive.

Re: Amazon Video

2016-10-15 Thread David Goldfield
Hi, Terri.

I'm a regular user of the Amazon Video app and so I will try and answer
your questions.

> >A friend was telling me about Amazon Video. They were saying that the
> app was free, that you only pay for what you download.

> >Is it pretty reasonably priced to rent a movie?
> I believe so but it's been a while since I've looked at rental prices.

> >They said you can buy movies as well.
> Yes.

> >Can you purchase tv shows?
> Yes. You can either purchase individual episodes or entire seasons.

> >I would imagine that this would be pretty expensive, though?
It depends on the movie or TV show. Some seasons might only cost $15-20,
some might be more expensive. You should visit Amazon's site and look at
prices for Instant Video, which is what you're looking for when it comes
to the app. Unfortunately, you can't use the app itself to purchase
content, although you can use it to search for it.
> >And I would imagine all that video would take up a lot of room?
>
> Does anything you purchase, have to stay on your device?
All shows and movies can be streamed and so they won't take up any extra
space. They can be downloaded for offline listening/viewing but this
isn't the default.

>
> >And of course, is this app pretty accessible?
It is quite accessible. The only issue you'll have a problem with is
their list of premium channels for renting content. Instead of reading
the name of the channel, VoiceOver just says "opens the landing view."

Serious App

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello again everyone,

Here is my last email, and question for now.

Quite a while back, I don't remember how long ago now, I had the Serious
app on my phone. I only took the trial. I never purchased it, because I
didn't feel the app was all that accessible. I found it difficult to get
to channels, or to know what channel I was on.

Plus, I realized that they were not as commercial free as they once
were, back in the day. I had a receiver in about 2004. LOL!

Anyway, has the app improved at all?

For people who have this, would it be worth purchasing?

I currently have a monthly subscription to Spotify, which I love!

I also have a pro, or maybe it is a premium, I can't remember how that
works, subscription to Tune-in. I really enjoy this as well, and it's
not very expensive.

Would I be better off just sticking with these 2 apps?

Thank you for any thoughts, or suggestions.

Terri

Looking for a deal on an iTunes gift card

2016-10-15 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I've seen from time to time on this list posts about iTunes gift cards or
gift codes at up to a 20% discount usually from eBay. I haven't seen any of
these for a while and I'm wondering does anyone have an app or other such
thing to alert them when these are available?

Thanks in advance for any help.

update on my ipad searching

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

Well somehow I was able to successfully search for 2 items. I'm not
quite sure how I got it to work, but I'm glad that I did.

One of the apps I was wanting was, Radium, the internet radio app. I
used to have it on my Iphone at one point.

So I found a button that said iphone only, and I tapped that. I found
the app just fine then. It's installed and working fine. The neat thing
about it is, it remembered right where I left off in the app. I probably
haven't had this app for close to a year. So that was cool!

I just wanted you all to know that for now, this doesn't seem to be an
issue for me.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Amazon Video

Hello All,
As to the Amazon Video app. I found a good deal of content on the system. Does
anyone know if any of the content is audio described? I found closed captioning
but no AD options. I e-mailed Amazon yesterday and didn't hear back.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

More Ipad questions

2016-10-15 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I apologize for all of the questions today. It's just that I don't get a
lot of time to sit down and ask what I need, a lot of the times.

So here are some questions I have. I hope someone will be kind enough to
help me out.

First of all, if I add an app to my Iphone, how can I make sure it does
not seem to automaticly get added to my Ipad?

I don't want this to happen. I have specific apps for my Iphone, and
specific apps for my Ipad.

Also, what are the pages, keynote, I University, Imovie, and things of
that nature?

Can I remove them from both my Iphone, and Ipad?

If so, how do I go about doing this?

Also, how do I go about removing the watch app, or the news app?

I don't want, or need these.

Also, I noticed that my Ipad doesn't have a storage option, under
settings, and general, like my Iphone does.

So how do I go about removing apps, if I decide at some point I no
longer want them?

Also, how do I check the storage space on my Ipad?

I know I have asked a lot of questions. So I appreciate everyone's
patience with me. I have just one more.

Is there a way to set it on my Ipad, so that I don't always have to
enter my password?

For instance, when I am downloading a free app. I know it can be done.
It is set like this on my Iphone. But I never set it up on my own. I got
a notification once when downloading something, and I took the option.

Ok, I am off for now. For the rest of the day, I will only respond to
replies I receive. Thank you again for your patience, and understanding.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: More IPad questions

2016-10-15 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Terri,

I am going to try to respond to some of your questions.

First of all, if I add an app to my IPhone, how can I make sure it does
not seem to automatically get added to my IPad?
Go to settings then to iTunes and App Store. Here you can turn automatic
downloads off.
Also, what are the pages, keynote, I University, Imovie, and things of
that nature?

Can I remove them from both my IPhone, and Ipad?

Yes you can delete these form your iPhone and iPad. Here is how to delete any
app in iOS 10. First flick up or down on an app and double tap on arrange apps.
Now find the app you want to delete and double tap on that app. Now double tap
on delete again to confirm. This also is for the news and watch apps. You can
only delete the news and watch apps with iOS 10. These are what Apple calls
stock apps. You can delete them though.
Also, I noticed that my Ipad doesn't have a storage option, under
settings, and general, like my IPhone does.

So how do I go about removing apps, if I decide at some point I no
longer want them?
You don't have to delete apps this way, but there definitely is a setting
called storage and iCloud usage under general settings. At least there is on my
iPad pro running iOS 10. Here is where you can manage your storage.

I hope this helps a little bit. I couldn't get to all of them, but hopefully I
gave you a little start.

Have a nice weekend!

Jenn
